Don't re-invent the wheel

If someone's done it before ... learn from them. Don't start from scratch.

If they have done well, you have a headstart, and if they have had problems, you know what to look out for

And remember - most people are flattered if you want to learn from them and pick up on their work; just be careful not to come across as critical of any issues they have, or to be in competition with them.
