Title: UK's rude place names to be toured by man on moped

A man is embarking on a 1,800-mile tour on a 50cc moped of places with rude and funny names.

Paul Taylor, from Wantage, Oxfordshire, is making the charity fundraising trip in memory of a friend who died of cancer.

His journey will begin in Shitterton, Dorset, on Wednesday and will take in locations such as Twatt in Orkney and Booze in the Yorkshire Dales.

From the BBC (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-cambridgeshire-58172334) - another place name story

Quote
News of a sinkhole which appeared in a road called The Butts has caused amusement among a town's residents on social media.

The hole and crack in Soham were reported to Cambridgeshire Police on Sunday.

A plethora of puns followed a police post on Facebook, with one person saying: "That can't be worded in a way that isn't amusing".

The county council said staff were looking into the suspected sinkhole.

Illustrative picture of the hole in the road; no council staff looking in the picture though - they must have seen what they needed.

It puts one in mind of how the good folk of Alton must once have regularly enjoyed the pleasures of going up the Butts Junction, perhaps leaving them them Bentworth and Lasham, or maybe even Medstead and Four Marks as permanent reminders of their leisure activities.

Is his itinerary available? I wonder how the residents of the places he chooses to visit will react to being chosen.

There are lots of amusing place names scattered around the UK. But only a few (very few) might be considered rude by some. Places like Bare in Lancashire aren't rude, but being a seaside location, some people might claim it is.

From an historical view, it might be more interesting to visit those places that have changed their names over the centuries because they were considered rude. Snottingham, for instance, might not have grown into the large east Midlands city it is now had it not done so. At a more local level, virtually every village and settlement in the country will have had street names that were definitely rude in the middle ages, but which are now heavily disguised or completely changed. An historic street map of any town can be quite shocking to see!

Magpie Lane in Oxford had some colourful names in years past.

I look forward to meeting him in Slag Lane ... which disappoints because it was to do with the slag tips from the local iron works.

Magpie Lane in Oxford had some colourful names in years past.

The signs denoting Turl Street in the same city are prone to having the last letter altered.

I wonder if the small cul-de-sac in nearby Little Sandhurst called "Cock-A-Dobby" would be on his list?
