Title: cheap weekend fares for season ticket holders?
Post by: norricorp on January 13, 2008, 11:57:59
Last year, Jan - Mar 2007, FGW did a promotion where a weekend return anywhere on the network was ^10 for holders of monthly plus season tickets.
Does anyone know if they are doing the same again this year? I have not seen any adverts for this and when I asked at Reading, the ticket issuer did not know.

I'm hoping they do this again, and have been half expecting something to appear. Let's face it, FGW need all the positive PR they can get with season ticket holders.

I buy a yearly season ticket and that also acts as a railcard for cheaper fares - although I am not quite sure what that means and haven't used it yet.  Mind you I only get a yearly ticket because my employer loans me the money to do so - I was buying monthly tickets beforehand.....

If it's a Devon and Cornwall Gold Card then you get 34% off Cheap Day Returns and Savers within Devon and Cornwall, another adult travelling with you gets the same discount, and you can take up to four children for ^1 each.

Does a D&C railcard reduce the price, of say a Paignton - Westbury SVR?

If it doesn't, you can just buy two tickets anyway.

Y-P isn't valid for First class tickets!

YP can't be used on normal walk on fares. On advanced fares it is valid for some strange reason.

Well, as vacman has suggested in other discussion threads - and I have agreed with him - the whole current fare structure should be scrapped and started again: this is just nonsense!

I say, good luck to Shazz if he can travel first class from Cardiff: he might even get to have a nice chat with Gavin and his friends!  :P

Yes it is a Gold Card and that's pretty good - we have three children (two of which are old enough to need tickets) so that's great news.  Will make use of that for sure.

With Gold Cards make sure you're aware of the ticket it applies to - for instance a Newbury to London would be a Network Goldcard, so you have a Network Railcard, etc.

We have Devon and Cornwall gold cards down here, valid exactly the same as a D&C railcard.

They should have more railcards. :)

And make them available for those under 16 to buy too.

Not really long distance!

Nope ...  ;D

IMHO make a child version available to get say 20% off for regular travellers. I certainly travelled around a lot.

A Bournemouth to London travelcard is ^20.05 - reduce that by 10% and I suspect you'll find a lot more people travelling.

It's better to get revenue than not to have any.

I used it this weekend to take three bored children and myself from Newton Abbot to Dawlish and it cost ^2 return - I think that's a good "added feature" of my season ticket for sure.
