Title: Extremely confusing displays and automated announcements
Post by: PhilWakely on August 10, 2017, 18:57:58
Today's 1C73 (0706 London Paddington to Penzance) failed on Rattery and had to set back to Totnes to get a run at the bank. It subsequently left Totnes 83 late and then ran non-stop from Plymouth to Penzance arriving 75 late. As a result, its next diagram, 1A89 (1303 Penzance to London Paddington) was cancelled between Penzance and Plymouth, where 1Z89 (1503 Plymouth to London Paddington) was substituted in 1A89's path.

At Newton Abbot, we then get the extremely confusing display
Quote
1641 London Paddington   Cancelled
1641 London Paddington   On time

And the even more confusing automated announcement......
Quote
"We regret to announce that the 1641 GWR service to London Paddington has been cancelled. The next fastest service to Exeter St Davids, Taunton and Reading will be the 1641 GWR service to London Paddington"

Is it the responsibility of GWR Control at Swindon to make the appropriate changes to the display and automated announcements, or is it the responsibility of the local platform staff to make an appropriate announcement?

To put it simply it's Control's responsibility to ensure alterations are fed through to the CIS and automated announcements, and it's up to the local staff to correct them when they haven't or are confusing.  Usually just after slapping their foreheads.

Not sure what happens to announcements, but we often see the 11:11 Westbury to Southampton cancelled, and an extra train running at 11:11 from Westbury to Southampton.   Confusing on JourneyCheck, but the customer aren't too bothered if the 11:11 is cancelled provided that another train runs at 11:11 ....

In effect the trains have merely changed Headcodes to a Class 9 when worked by a 153 as a reminder of the restriction at Salisbury.    I've tweeted GWR several times but they just don't get it, pointing out to them that putting the info on Journey Check can confuse passengers which it has done.    They say that the trains have to be cancelled and an additional run in lieu so replied that in internal systems, yes agreed , but why show in the Public domain and create confusion.
