Title: Michael Portillo is out & about again
Post by: ChrisB on September 07, 2012, 09:07:59
This time journeying around the Chiltern Mainline.

Wednesday night he was in High Wycombe, last night he stayed in Banbury. LMS, SAV and BMO to follow. Part of a series to go out in January.

According to SVR insiders, a visit to the Severn Valley Railway/Telford/Ironbridge is also on the cards.
Perhaps this is on the same journey?

Although my current life sees me in FGW land I grew up in the Banbury area so await this series with interest.

Thanks for posting ChrisB

This shocking footage shows the moment Michael Portillo DELAYS a train just to get a better shot. :P

A BBC spokesman refused to comment. :P

(NB: use of "tongue in cheek smilies")

On a day when two people have died on the railways around London, this video hardly qualifies as shocking in the grand scheme of things.  Possibly mildly annoying for some of the passengers on board... but then again they might have enjoyed their famous passenger's company.  ::)

Do you know what scheduled service it was on? I can check what the delay has been attributed to :P

No I don't - perhaps comment on the vid and ask the uploader. (I don't have an account)
If it were greater than 5 mins, would LM get compo from the BBC?

Can imagine the headline: "Licence fee payers pay for rail delays" ;D

Looks to me like it was the lady in the white top with the case who was delaying the doors being closed, in the last few seconds of the clip.  And there's no evidence that the train was not waiting time etc.

Think tonight on BBC 2 is a new series. The existing ones are being repeated on other channels.

I beg to differ...I think I would remember it as it would have passed near my home town and I think I would have remembered that (but I may be wrong)

The BBC2 and BBCHD series at 18:30 is definitely new.  BBC4 is repeating some programmes at other times.

The channel Yesterday is also repeating the earlier series.

I was wrong, sorry....just remember them filming it as it was testerday!

So many continuity errors! And who checked MP's ticket leaving BAN? Didn't look like a train guard/manager to me....:-)

On the subject of leaving Banbury what sort of wagons were those pulling out to the left of the shot? They looked like the railway equivalent of glazing wagons.

That's roughly what they are.  They are known as 'Kirov tilting wagons' and they carry out of gauge panels for switch and crossing (S&C or points) replacement.  The yellow framework sections you saw in the Banbury shot are in the travelling mode (at about 60 degrees away from horizontal), and are lowered once on a worksite.

The key point  is that S&C panels can be manufactured and tested under factory conditions and moved to their intended location without having to be dismantled and then reassembled trackside, hence speeding up renewals.

Found a set of four videos with a complete train including the Kirov rail crane unloading the panels:

Thanks Paul - great explanation.
