Title: Thatcham to Zoomtown-on-sea
Post by: grahame on July 22, 2021, 09:40:12
A BBC Story (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-57892934)

Quote
It was three in the morning when Sam Lancaster found her family's new Yorkshire home by the sea.

"I don't even know what brought Scarborough into my head. I just googled it," she says.

It was house-love at first sight. But there was another key piece of information. Her husband Craig had been told by his firm, Vodafone, that he could work - indefinitely - from home. Meetings with colleagues would take place virtually in future. Sam and Craig suddenly realised that they and their two daughters could live anywhere - including the seaside.

The Lancasters say they had "outgrown" their home in Thatcham, Berkshire, not far from Craig's office in Newbury. No longer constrained by the geography of a daily commute, they started looking for better value houses in other parts of the country. Now, they're unpacking boxes in a big, rambling home on the North Yorkshire coast, with the sea a blue horizon out the back window.

And in this week's picture-postcard sunshine, they have been swimming in the sea most days.

I doubt he was a Thatcham to Newbury rail commuter ... but an example of our changing metrics.

A very short if sluggish commute from Thatcham to Vodafone. How long will it take companies to realise that if they can employ someone several hundred miles away in Britain then they can employ someone several thousands of miles away for a fraction of the salary?

That would certailnly be a novel approach to levelling up...

Until the pandemic, I provided face to face training - which I was in the process of winding down and retiring from, though I was still teaching a really good client who swore by my product and had been using us for years.   Happy to train them online when we hit lockdown, but their powers-that-be insisted they accept the lower bid from a company in Malaysia, even though the delegates, technical managers and training admins were less than thrilled.    Counter to that, I could have chosen to take the other large client at that point and move from a UK based / training in UK and Europe setup to bidding worldwide though there San Diego operation (with whom I got and get on very well).

Thatcham to Newbury rail commuter
I have heard that Reading Buses are selling the Vodaphone buses/coaches used for the Newbury station etc connections to their site.
