At least Auntie's got it right this time. I remember a BBC report about these trains but using the Chiltern GX to Pad service, which is not a ghost train but one to retain driver route knowledge.

Try http://www.psul4all.free-online.co.uk/intro.htm (http://www.psul4all.free-online.co.uk/intro.htm)

Gives a complete summary of Ghost Trains and trains taking unusual routes in 2012 it also has historical records.

Not sure what constitutes a ghost train rather than booked service over an unusual route.

I suppose the classic Stockport Staybridge one way on a Friday counts as  ghost train but the line is apprently also used by the Rail Touring Co Scarborough Flyer!

But what about

Bristol Dr.Days Junction - Feeder Bridge Junction (123,132) PC01
1553 SSuX Bristol Parkway - Bath Spa
Also used by trains (diverted from the direct Swindon - Bristol Parkway route) shown to call at Bristol Parkway with extended station time (or Bath Spa then Newport), but not shown to call at Bristol Temple Meads: none shown in timetable.

To quote a FGW example.

Editted to elimate some typos and introduce others.  I realyy must learn to proof read!

These are the ones I picked up based on LINES in or very near to FGW territory with less that one train per day.

Quote
Westbury East Loop Junction - Hawkeridge Junction
1706 SSuX Paddington - Bristol Temple Meads

Didcot West Curve Junction - Foxhall Junction
2146 SSuX Reading - Birmingham New Street

Carmarthen Junction - Carmarthen Bridge Junction
1057 SuX Cardiff Central - Fishguard Harbour

Margam East Junction - Margam Moors Junction via OVE (Ogmore Vale Extension)
0357 SSuX Swansea - Paddington

Bristol Dr.Days Junction - Feeder Bridge Junction
1553 SSuX Bristol Parkway - Bath Spa

Doesn't cover stations though - such as Pilning - where plenty passes through but nothing useful stops.    I wouldn't actually consider the Westbury loop service to be a "Ghost". Indeed - it may be a first shoot rather than a last remenant.

0357 swa to pad via OVE is purely route knowledge retention based
