Title: Still getting around though much reduced driving - an example for others?
Post by: grahame on April 26, 2021, 11:23:43
From my Blog on Saturday (http://grahamellis.uk/blog114.html)

Quote
It IS possible to slash private car mileage and still get around!

In 2008, I was driving 30,000 miles a year.
By 2018, I was driving 3,000 miles a year.
And that is from Melksham

Story goes on to say why

Health warning - I'm standing for Town Council and there's a strong flavour of "vote for me" in there ...

This afternoon, we'll be driving 20 of our 3,000 miles for this year ... reports to follow, perhaps.

I filled the tank of my diesel Golf just before Christmas.

Four months later I will have to refill it...

I feel quite green...  :) and smug!

Added 29 Apr: In the sense of completeness I filled the tank on 16 December 2020 and added 49.22 litres on 28 April 2021 having driven 333 miles in the meantime for an average of 30.76 mpg. All these were short distance trips to supermarkets, doctors' surgeries, hospitals, the local farm shop and the like which is reflected in the low mpg figure - normally we get over 40 mpg.

Agree, and whilst an electric car should be still greener, the economics would be very doubtful if fossil fuel only needs filling a few times a year.

Having reached middle age without learning to drive at all it can be done.

Occasionally it can be expensive in cabs and there can be a lot of waiting around for trains and buses. Mainly though I think its kept me reasonably fit having to walk/cycle as I don't have any other option.

Although having said all that now I'm moving to a very rural location I may need to be able to drive in an emergency so might be time to think about lessons again.
