Title: BTP issue poster of 30 "criminal children" on South Coast Line
Post by: Marlburian on August 23, 2022, 21:53:20
"Out-of-control children are behind a crime wave plaguing communities along the South Coast. The young yobs are targeting shops and railway stations, terrorising staff and the public."  (https://www.theargus.co.uk/news/20672478.worthing-west-sussex-criminal-children-pictured-police-poster/)

I don't understand the references to the West Coast, including the "West Coast Nominals", and nor does at least one of those who commented at the bottom of the article. Could it be that journalistic standards on The Argus are as poor they are on news websites in the Thames Valle area?

(Perhaps by the time some of you read this, reporter George Carden may have corrected any error.)

West Coast is most probably a reference to the Brighton to Portsmouth/Southampton line or services, referred to in Southern’s timetables and maps as the “West Coastway” route.  The far side of Brighton being the East Coastway.

Gangs of feral children are a growing problem, with the police and courts seemingly unable to do much about them.
Time for a crackdown I feel.

It seems the poster is for staff reference rather than public display. Or if it is on public display, it's not going to be much use!

A British Transport Police (BTP) officer created the poster and gave it to Southern Rail to "aid safeguarding and crime prevention efforts" following continued harrassment.

The identities of the Tilley brothers can be published after Judge Christine Henson QC lifted reporting restrictions in July, meaning their identities could be revealed to the public.

Section 49 of the Children and Young Persons Act 1933 places an automatic restriction on reporting information that identifies or is likely to identify any person under the age of 18 who is concerned in youth court proceedings as a victim, witness or defendant.

This means we cannot reveal the identities of the other 28 children on the poster and have blacked out their faces. Fourteen of them are girls.
