FURIOUS residents in a picturesque corner of Laira are complaining to the Government over the sudden appearance of a "horrifying" 50ft communications mast.
Families in Laira Avenue and Finch Close awoke to find the giant metal structure had been put up overnight by Network Rail ^ without, they say, any warning.

To be honest nimbyism aside I would be a bit annoyed if that appeared that close to my house overnight without warning (see photo) if the report in the Plymouth Evening herald paper is to be believed.

"...She said: "We've had no notification, no consultation and they put it up in the dark overnight, which we feel is very suspicious, like some cloak and dagger operation..."

Well either that or doing it overnight meant there were no trains around. 

What irritates me a bit is that the local news article gives the impression this is some special case, there are almost bound to be a few already in the Plymouth area, because of the requirement for them to be directionally aimed along the railway - and that's where a lot of houses happen to be.   Yet every time this comes up it is as though it is the first occurence ever...   ::)

I think it looks OK. It lends a kind of symmetry to the pylon in their neighbours' garden.

Well the Plymouth Herald (like the Western Morning News) is owned by Northcliffe Media, part of the Daily Mail & General Trust, which is run by the controlling shareholder, the non-domiciled Conservative party supporter Viscount Rothermere. The Mail, Metro and the London Evening Standard are also part of this person's media empire, as are all the "this is" websites....

 

Personally, I was rather impressed that a team of Network Rail engineers apparently managed to construct all of that, overnight and under cover of darkness, without anyone noticing until the following morning. :o

It makes you wonder why some of their other 'engineering work' over-runs, eh? :P

You beat me to it Chris, I too wanted to congratulate Network Rail on what appears to be a very silent installation.

Its all about where you live ! Look at the Looe branch last year , resident outcry ! Gunnislake too !
 Now cross over to North Road , near the old postal dock , far closer to houses and more of an eyesore , any outcry..... no ??
 I think Network Rail have learnt some lessons , get em up quick and then suffer the residents wrath :)
 To be honest , im very suprised Network rail couldn't find any space across the track at Laira Depot ??
