Quote Exmouth's rail station should be rebuilt, say Alrug (the Avocet Line Rail Users Group). The suggestion has come from Alrug as part of its response to Government consultation on what future rail services should look like... "The busy Exeter to Exmouth rail line is booming, with an almost 11 per cent growth in passengers in the past year," says an Alrug spokesperson. "With even more people set to use the line as Exeter expands, its user group is calling for new investment, in stations and trains, when the franchise is renewed next year. Passenger journeys on the line have increased by over 60 per cent in the last 10 years and the number is still growing. "As a result Exmouth station no longer meets rail industry standards. The 1976 built station has become cramped, with queues at the single ticket window and a lack of facilities for passengers. It should be rebuilt, probably as part of town regeneration." Other changes Alrug would like to see are improvements to Digby and Sowton station. Opened in 1995 to serve Sowton Business Park and Tesco at Digby, Alrug complains of a narrow station platform that gets badly crowded, inadequate shelter, queues at the single ticket machine and no toilet or other facilities. The group's hopes for the longer term future are bound up with proposals for a Devon Metro system, which will enhance rail services for commuters across Exeter. Some 25,000 new houses and 20,000 new jobs are planned for the eastern side of the City, in an area bisected by the Exmouth railway. Two new stations are proposed for the line, with another at Marsh Barton ^ resulting in a massive increase in use of the line during the next 15 years. Alrug also wants to see a train every half hour on Sundays and a longer platform at St James Park so that all train doors can be opened. Added image of new station. I expect M&S made a contribution. They like fooodhalls to be near stations to capture the commuter market going to work getting a sandwich or coming home to get a quick meal to cook at home. The station booking hall and frontage has been greatly improved. One key benefit is that the "Out of hours" entrance/exit is now through the building and not using the side gate and round via the old bus station.
