Title: Rhydgaled Exploring Picture Quiz
Post by: Rhydgaled on June 06, 2012, 01:21:17
I headed off on an explore on Saturday, returning today. My pictures are rather large, so I'll link to them rather than post them here. Who can guess/tell were they were taken (I'll add descriptions as correct guesses come in, and might upload some more snaps when they are all done)?

Picture 1 - Carlisle  (http://www.flickr.com/photos/76103602@N03/7343303080/) bignosemac (after I posted a second picture of the location as a clue)
Picture 2 - Settle (http://www.flickr.com/photos/76103602@N03/7343299530/) Worcester_Passenger, who went one better than me and identified the building in the background as Giggleswick school chapel
Picture 3 - Class 395 - NRM York (railfest) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/76103602@N03/7343296254/) bignosemac / EBrown
Picture 4 - Class 91 - NRM York (railfest) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/76103602@N03/7343292910/) bignosemac
Picture 5 - Llansteffan Castle from Ferryside (http://www.flickr.com/photos/76103602@N03/7343276422/) grahame (he said Laugharne, which isn't quite correct but I decided to give him it anyway)
Picture 6 - Stokesay Castle (near Craven Arms) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/76103602@N03/7343290018/) Worcester_Passenger
Picture 7 - I'm not sure if I remember this one myself now (http://www.flickr.com/photos/76103602@N03/7158076923/)
Picture 8 - Taken from the Swansea avoiding Line behind Llandore depot (http://www.flickr.com/photos/76103602@N03/7158073901/) Oxman

Note: these aren't necessarily listed in the order taken. If some are easy and others hard, it might help to try and work out my route from the easy ones and hence deduce where the others might be.

Finding it hard to reconcile ECML with West Wales.

Ok, sounds like a very slight clue is in order.

Picture 2 may look a bit like it was taken in my home country (Wales), but it wasn't. I traveled out of Wales on Saturday, and didn't go back into Wales until yesterday (5th June). In other words, I had three nights in hotels in England.

Picture 3 is a Class 395 'Javelin' - Can you take more than one guess?

Concur that picture 3 is a Class 395 and I suspect it was taken in the same location as the Class 91 in picture 4.....

.... York.

Correct. That is only half the answer to that picture though, the other part is where was this particular 395 when I took the picture?

Yes, you may take more guesses, but it might be a good idea to wait 24hrs when you make a correct guess to give others a chance (though since you only half-got this one, feel free to make another guess right away).

Correct, class 91 and 395 both taken at railfest, NRM York.

Obviously helped that I was there this past Saturday! Really is nowhere else you can get that close to have the Class 91 spec plate at head height!

I also took a similar picture of the 395 interior.

It was obviously York; the CIS isn't on and passengers don't tend to stand when they are actually moving!

Hmm. Rhydgaled has mentioned elsewhere that we still haven't identified the locations of several of his pictures here, so I thought I'd have another try.

But I still can't get any of the unsolved ones: would anyone else care to have a go?  ;)

Ok will try Number 8: Swansea, somewhere near Landore. Liberty stadium in the background?

6 is Stokesay Castle, just south of Craven Arms

5 - Laugharne?

I'm in agreement with Oxman about Picture 8. Looks like it may have been taken from a train travelling on the west side of the Landore triangle.

Once again Worcester_Passenger beats me to it. We must know the same places.

Indeed, Liberty stadium in the background and the tracks of Landore depot in the foreground. The train I was on was stationary for a while, waiting for that 158 to get ahead. I was rather supprised to end up there as I was expecting to be routed via the Swansea District Line.

EDIT: Somebody also got it on Flickr and posted the answer in a comment, so don't know who got it first.

Correct. Wasn't Craven Arms station once called 'Craven Arms and Stokesay'?

5 - Laugharne?
I think I know why you said that, but not quite correct.

Unfortunately, I've just realised I cannot remember where picture 7 (the class 60) was taken now, it's one of two places though I think.

Yes, it was - until 1974: see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Craven_Arms_railway_station  ;)

I got it by a process of deduction! ATW train, stadium in the background, and sidings in the foreground. So I looked up Liberty Stadium on the net, checked it out with google maps, and decided it was most likely!

Elementary, dear Rhydgaled!

Still three to go (well, four, but even I don't know the answer to one of them).

5 - Laugharne?
I think I know why you said that, but not quite correct.

Since it's been a while and some are still unanswered, I think I'll let Grahame have that one. The castle is Llansteffan taken from a train near Ferryside. Laugharne, according to Google Earth, is behind the land mass in this picture, across a second river.

Just two left (unless anyone revives my memory of where I saw that class 60).

Clue: neither are in Wales, and they are both on/near the same line.

I've apparently nearly reached a 200 picture limit on Flickr, does anyone know what happens if I go over it without upgrading to Pro? Does it prevent you going over the limit or do some of your pictures disappear (if so, to what extent do they disapear, are they gone completly or is it just you can't manage them when logged in?)?

Two years later... Still nobody has got the remaining two :o

Perhaps a photographic clue is in order (see attachment, a much-more recent photo than in the quiz).

I do believe it is (I was just looking for 'Settle' as an answer, I didn't know the identity of the building in the background). I've Googled the chapel and it does appear to be the correct building.

Picture 7 was I think probably taken near Port Talbot but I can't remember for sure.
