Title: Unique opportunity to travel the Portbury Branch Line - Saturday 29 Sept 2012
Post by: Chris from Nailsea on August 22, 2012, 23:08:18
First Great Western is delighted to be hosting the Community Rail Festival 2012 at Bristol Temple Meads Station on Saturday 29 September.

Visitors to the festival will have the opportunity to ride a special charter train from Bristol Temple Meads along the Portbury Branch Line, through the Avon Gorge and below Brunel's Clifton Suspension Bridge.

The line is currently only used by freight services but is the subject of a campaign to re-open it to passenger traffic.

The event promises to be an excellent day for visitors and residents and will include a station gala with stalls, attractions and information, promoting the achievements of Community Rail Partnerships throughout the UK.

Five special trains will run between 09:00 and 16:00 and tickets must be booked in advance through the First Great Western website via the following link: www.fgwevents.co.uk/communityrailfestival

Thanks for letting us know

No problem!  :D

As it's on my home ground (Severnside Community Rail Partnership), I'll be there on the day, too: I'll be happy to chat with any of you who might want to introduce yourselves.

Chris.  ;D

I am also booked on the 1109.  CfN can you let us know any more about the arrangements for the tickets.  I get a web confirmation when I booked but there is no information about price or when you will get confirmation that you actually have a ticket.  I am away for two weeks from this Friday (so can't make the get together on 15th) and don't want to miss out purely because I can't respond to an email on time.  Thanks

It won't cost anything to get on the special train.

People should be receive an email this week letting them know if they will be getting tickets in the post.

Hope that helps :)

Thanks, Ollie.   Also acts as a reminder not to count our chickens tickets before they're hatched delivered.  I hadn't realised that having my request accepted doesn't actually mean I've been quick enough to get a ticket.

The website advertising this opportunity "fgwevents" appears rather obscure. How would anyone find it if they didn't know where to look (or have a helpful link)?

Whilst I was searching the main fgw site for details of the special trains, I found under "events" a whole series of events ranging from Stoke City's home matches, to a festival at Manchester Piccadilly Platform 4, all of which you can apparently reach with FGW. There were others from elsewhere in the country, before anyone thinks First have pre-empted their takeover of the WC franchise. I'm not quite sure what the relevance is to FGW.

VERY good point. It's only down to inefficiency on my part that I haven't booked connecting tickets to Bristol Temple Meads.

Looks like we'll be a disparate bunch from the Coffee Shop turning up at different points during the day.

I'd therefore suggest that Coffee Shop members look to pop in and out of Bonaparte's on Platform 3 to hopefully meet other forum members. Walk in carrying an FGW timetable, or shamelessly ask, "Is anyone from the Coffee Shop here?"  ;D

My plans for the day are now fixed so look out for the mug on the right in this picture:

You may also spot the 'mug' on the left. That's grahame, this forum's head honcho!  ;) :P ;D

Edit note: I've now added a picture of myself to this post - simply to give you all fair warning of who to look out for / avoid, as appropriate.  Chris from Nailsea.  ;)

Appreciated Brucey. I've emailed Vicky at FGW Comms to see whether there is room for just one more on either of the later services.

It's not the end of the world though, I've bashed both the Henbury loop and line to Portbury stop board before on a HST special.

I'll still be present through the day at Temple Meads for all the other Community Rail festivities as well as likely propping up the bar in Bonapartes!

Four Track, Now! - you have a PM.  ;)

I was successful in obtaining one ticket for the 15:12 - my e-mail from FGW says "I^m writing to confirm that you^ve been successful in your bid for tickets on the 15.12 service from Bristol Temple Meads along the Portbury Branch, departing from Platform 8."

However, if that particular excursion is also not actually going to Portbury, according to the timings posted by Brucey, then I don't really want to use it.  It's offered free to anyone who would like it: please post here if you're interested!

CfN.  :(

I have also been unsuccessful.  However as I wanted to go to Portbury and the 1108 now appears to go to Avonmouth, not too disappointed.  Out of curiosity, does anyone know how the tickets were allocated.  Was it first come, first served or by ballot as all trains were clearly oversubscribed.

Quote
The tickets for the Community Rail Festival special charter trains have been received in the First Great Western office today. These tickets will be sent out in todays and tomorrows post.

Just to remind you, all the trains will depart from Platform 8 on Saturday 29 September.

Many thanks for your patience.

Quote
It would appear there have been a number of issues with the tickets for the First Great Western Community Rail trains. Unfortunately when the data was transposed from the on line registration some of the information has been incorrectly recorded including the number of tickets you originally requested. Please accept my apologies for this inconvenience,

I can assure you that the number of tickets you originally requested will be honoured on the day. The tickets that you have received will get you through the gateline at Bristol Temple Meads on Saturday 29 September. Once you get to the station either myself or a colleague will be more than happy to take your details and make sure you get the correct number of seats on the correct train.

Once again I am terribly sorry for any inconvenience you may have experienced.

I look forward to seeing you on the 29th September.

Was going but...
A comedy of errors...
Applied for two tickets for the 11.08, got a reply saying 'all tickets had gone', shame
Then got another email from 'Vicky Cropper' at FGW saying that had an extra coach (assuming it's a 153) and that i had then been successful, tickets would be with the lucky applicants by last Friday...they never arrived, also received another email from 'V.C' at FGW saying there was a print error on the tickets and to bring them to the gates on platform 8 and it would be sorted so all that were booked could catch the respective trains on the day...How can I do that when I didn't get my tickets??? Emailed her back with my 'problem', received an email saying 'she is now on holiday' and to contact someone else.
I have now given up and will go to Bodmin Railway Diesel Running day on the 29th instead
Therefore , FGW, thanks for nothing basically...wonderful P.R...NOT
But good luck to all who will enjoy the day and trips

I'll be on the 1209 service.  Arriving into Temple Meads at 1048 on the 0910 from Southampton Central and whatever Southern service connects into this from Cosham.  After the service returns, I'll be heading up to Redland and/or Clifton Down to have a walk down memory lane, so will be departing on the 1434.

This is a rather awful mugshot of myself from about a year ago, please say hello if you see me wandering around (I'll probably head to Spoons to grab something to drink) :P
(http://imageshack.us/a/img805/4158/37847010150527512184853.jpg)

I am assuming a rear-facing seat on the right side of the train will give the best view and will be forward facing for the majority of the journey?

I'm heading up from Taunton, quite possibly via Westbury. Two reasons; firstly the 0919 TAU-WSB has a Travelling Chef so I can grab some breakfast. Secondly, I do all I can to avoid Voyagers! I'll be at Temple Meads from around 11am.

Brucey, looks like my connection at Westbury may have me joining you on your train up from Southampton. I'll look out for you.  ;)

Latest e-mail from First Great Western, in case you haven't seen it:

Quote
We look forward to meeting you at the Community Rail Festival on Saturday 29 September.

You should now have received your tickets, or confirmation of alternative arrangements. If not please contact me immediately so that we can resolve any outstanding problems.

All the special charter trains will depart from platform 8 and we would be grateful if you can arrive 15 minutes before departure. The trains are made up of two Class 150 units and one Class 153 unit. There is a toilet on board but refreshments are not being served.

As you know we have made the decision to offer complimentary travel on these special services. The Community Rail Festival is however supporting a number of charities who will be represented on the day.  To support them and to boost the Festival atmosphere we will be taking a collection as you board - this will be split between the charities present on the day. Giving is not compulsory, but we thought you would want to be prepared!

Stalls supporting the Festival will be on Platform 3 and we do hope you will allow time to visit.

I should hopefully be on the 15:12 and the 16:09, if any forum members want to say hello (I'll definitely look out for the admins!) , I'll look like the picture I've (hopefully!) attached, wearing a black jacket, blue jeans, black backpack, and with a smallish camera bag in front of my stomach, and possibly carrying a tripod..!

My plans ... arrive in BRI at 10:15 and travel on the 11:08 (part of a group with tickets). Leave BRI on the 14:22 or 15:00 to head home.  Would love to stay later and meet up with afternoon people (and say "hello" to you, Temple Meads), but there's an 8 hour gap in my trains home from 15:00 until 20:33 for me  >:(

Would quite like to go since I haven't been on the branch since riding on a chocolate and cream DMU in 1985! so if anyone does have spares I can get over to BTM for the 09:05. Cheers,

Congratulations to everyone involved in making todays Community Rail Partnership Fesival a success and a most enjoyable occasion in such glorious sunshine. Special thanks to the person(s) who arranged for the 1315  unscheduled stop at Temple Meads on the way back from Portbury, as some of us oldies needed some relief ! ::)

Puzzled as to why there appeared to be no representation/ representative from the Portishead Railway Action Group. I would have thought this would have been a golden opportunity to publicise the work of the group. On a previous visist to Portbury I saw a deputation with banners and flags  at the Portishead junction ... this time, nothing. With a membership of 500 I would have thought some of us could have got something up together....if only we had been asked.

Good to meet grahame, BNM and rogerw  in the flesh.

Many thanks to everyone who helped organise it and the staff who actually worked the trains today.

I did speak to someone on the train  when we got to Portbury (I was the young man  with glasses sat at the end of the class 153 with a red camera pouch on my lap.)

I was on the 11:08, and there was a group of around 4 people talking about handing out publicity material, and saying that it felt rather inappropriate to do so as they weren't going on the Portishead line.  I'm guessing this may have been a group of the PRAG people who, like me, had been "sold" on a trip on the line towards Portishead, but had ended up on the Henbury loop.   If only the trains had been clearly advertised throughout as to which was going where, they could have selected appropriate times.  Truth be known, when I booked I read it as all trains to Portbury (or just short thereof), and I had "sold" the idea of a ride under the Clifton Bridge to two very good friends who accompanied me ... not under the bridge on the Avon Gorge, but across Filton Airfield!    Fortunately, they're very understanding and a good and interesting time was had by all, so I didn't have to apologise to them for misrepresentation of the trip too much!

Unlike Grahame I managed to talk my way on to the 1209.  It was nice to put some faces to names and thanks to everyone involved.  I think though that the day was a lesson in how not to handle publicity.  There were a number of rather disgruntled people on the 1108 who had specifically come for a ride to Portbury.  Somewhat tongue in cheek, I did suggest to some that they ask for their money back.    ;D
As an aside did anyone inspect the damage done by the gate post?

Unlike Grahame I managed to talk my way on to the 1209 ...

I decided not to try ... I suspect we could have travelled on that train, and had I been on my own I would have been tempted to try "blagging" it with one of the cheerful onboard etam who we had just done the Henbury loop with. However, one of our party was nearly 90, and by the time that many of the punters had been chucked out of their seats in the 153 for the VIPs, the 150 was full and standing; it may have levelled out once it got going and been seats for all, but it was not a risk I was even tempted to take. And besides, we'd had our freebie (granted, not the one we had expected) and it should be fair dibs for all ...

Amongst others I spoke to you! Wasn't a problem getting a ticket 'on the day' for the 09:05, certainly the first car (the 153) had plenty of free seats. I imagine things got busier later as the 16:08 was strengthened to 5 cars! Thanks to Severnside community rail partnership and FGW for organising and running these trips - over 25 years since I last had a trip up the branch. Took a bike ride up the gorge after to get some pics and examine the remains of the final 3 miles to Portishead. There is still some track in situ varying from some very good condition flat bottom rail on concrete sleepers, to bullhead on rotten wooden sleepers under the motorway. Lets hope the re-opening goes ahead.

I was on the 09:05. It was planned that we waited at Ashton Junction on the way out for a freight train to come off the single line. However we spent over half an hour at Portbury with the driving changing ends twice. No announcement was made but I was told later it was down to a problem with the brakes. Meant we were 20 mins late back to BRI which limited the amount of time I had to look at the stalls - not that they were that extensive.

Still a good day out which again I only learned about because of the Coffeeshop.

Out of interest did anyone else see the damage caused by the fence post? The units were stabled in the bay platform when I left at 840 and all 5 cars had scratches on them ... Deep ones!, infact the 153 had lost a cover of some kind and regional railways livery was visible and one of the 150's was lucky not to loose its coolant cap.

I had a really good day and was great meeting you all, even if apple maps tried to get me lost! :-)

As I said I was on the first one and I did notice us being very close to a gate post on the left hand side as we passed the stop board but I didn't hear any noise.  Maybe that was the reason we spent an extra 20 mins there before we came back.  The post was literally two or three inches from the body side just below the windows.  It also had evidence of making contact with something in the past as sections of red paint were missing.

Yes I also didnt hear any noise although yes I did think the clearance between the train and the posts was pretty close.

Someone has posted a photo showing the scrap on  one of the class 150's on flickr (I will post the link later unless someone beats me to it)

Never mind here it is:

One thing I hope they do if/when they re-open the Portishead branch is cut back a lot of the vegitation as this was commented by a few people on the 09:05 from Bristol yesterday that the view from the train was terrible in places especially close to the Clifton suspension bridge

A very enjoyable day out.  It was good to see everyone on-board smiling, including the FGW staff.  Also nice to meet a number of the forum members and fellow moderators.

I was surprised that the train continued past the post/gate on every subsequent journey, considering that the reversal occurred just a few yards further.  I did manage to get two photographs of the post attacking the train.

I do wonder how much this event has cost First Great Western, especially considering the services were delayed (the 1209 by some 50 minutes) and an unscheduled stop added in at BRI.

From the BBC (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-bristol-19769482):

Quote
Passengers ride freight line from Bristol-to-Portbury

Since early 2002 the route to Portbury has been used by freight services

Campaigners hoping for the re-opening of a passenger rail route between Portishead and Bristol have been travelling on the line.

As part of the First Great Western community rail festival, passenger trains are being run on a section of the route - currently used for freight.

More than 500 people are expected to make the journey from Temple Meads.

But railway operator First Great Western says it does not mean the route will be fully re-opened.

"This is more a question for the new franchise and the bidding process for that is ongoing," a spokesman said. "We've been working with Bristol City Council and other rail groups in the area to work out what that service might look like. [Today] we're giving them the experience of what route the proposed Bristol Metro will actually take towards Portbury Docks."

Alan Matthews, from the Portishead Railway Group which is campaigning for the line to be open to passengers, said any reopening could be at least three years away. "It shows it can be done and things are moving forward now," he said. "But at least First Great Western is showing the line can be opened."

The Portbury line was reopened in December 2001, when the then Transport Minister John Speller joined 150 people on a steam train journey through the Avon Gorge from Bristol's Parson Street station to Royal Portbury Dock.

Since early 2002 the route has been used by freight services. It has long been the subject of a campaign for re-opening to passenger traffic to ease congestion on the A369 - one of the main commuter routes Bristol from the west.

An enjoyable day out and nice to put some more faces to names. I was able to blag a run on the 1209 (thanks Jane  ;D), a trip with relex109, ollie, rogerw and Brucey. One part of the trip I found mildly amusing was seeing the surprised looks on the faces of people waiting at Severn Beach Line stations for the scheduled service that was a few minutes behind us!

This was followed by a few ciders in 'Spoons and rail related chat. I rather lost track of time and consequently missed the train I'd planned to catch that would've gotten me to Taunton for the bus to where I'm currently staying. I thought there were later buses, but alas not and I had to fork out ^35 for a taxi. It was either that or walk 11 miles!

On the 09:05 we had no "commentary" other than a warning before we left that this was a charter train and not a normal service train and the usual exhortation to get off at Bristol Temple Meads on the return "where this train terminates."

..and that after oversleeping and missing the bus in the morning.   Must try harder!   ;D ;D  I came back through Bristol Temple Meads just before nine and wondered if I would see any stragglers make their way back to NLS or TAU.
