First has announced an average 4.1 per cent increase on fares , blaming the move on rising fuel costs , staff salaries and vehicle insurance.

The new fares will come into effect on Wednesday January 2 , following season ticket price hikes which came into effect in July.

Most standard adult single and return fares in Bristol , South Gloucestershire , Somerset and Avon will rise by 10p , with a maximum increase of 20p on some routes.

Child single fares in Bristol will remain unchanged , but most other fares for children will rise by 5p and First is also raising the price of its cards of 10 single journeys by ^1.

"People aren't going to be happy about it at all.

"It's all very well having shiny Showcase routes but people in this city want a bus network which they can use and putting up fares isn't going to encourage people to do that.

"The problem lies in the fact that First has complete control over its fares because there are hardly any services subsidised by the Government or the city council."
