Pensioners and the disabled are being offered discounted travel rail cards from next week.

South Gloucestershire Council's ruling cabinet said holders of its Diamond Travel Card , which gives free bus travel, would get the option of applying for a discount rail card.

The reduction in rail fares is approximately one third off most journeys and the disabled can be accompanied by a companion for the same reduction.

John Calway , leader of the Conservative group , said: "Despite the great merits of the Diamond Travel Card, I know very many residents feel frustrated that they cannot use it on local rail services."

"Pensioners and disabled residents want to see improved access to rail travel and this scheme is part of our commitment to improving transport in the community which people want. Offering discounted rail cards will help make this more attractive and hopefully encourage more pensioners and the disabled to use local train services more, which will have the added benefit of supporting services like the Severn Beach line."
