People gather at Pencoed railway station following the incident on Monday

Rail services in south Wales have been disrupted following the death of a man on the line.

A number of First Great Western trains were cancelled or diverted after the incident at Pencoed railway station on Monday.

The man was hit by the Swansea to London Paddington service at about 13:10 BST, which was then terminated at Cardiff said British Transport Police.

The death is not being treated as suspicious.

A spokesman for First Great Western said two further services had to be diverted, which delayed passengers by 30 minutes.

A British Transport Police spokesman said: "Paramedics from the Welsh Ambulance Service also attended but the man was pronounced dead at the scene. Enquiries are ongoing to establish the man's identity and inform his next of kin."

Very sad for all concerned.

Seems to me that railway suicides seem to be on the rise at the moment in the FGW region......or maybe we just get to hear about them more?

Thanks for posting, TaplowGreen.

However, we do not know that this latest sad case was a suicide: that will be decided by the coroner.

Not for the FGW region, and data getting a bit old ... but some interesting figures here.

I'm not sure that I agree that a correlation should be accepted between rising passenger numbers and a rising suicide rate, which the article seems to do.

I do know that I'm far more likely to here of them these days with improved data feeds that give a whole wide area picture.   And I suspect that applies to we - our members here - too simply because (again) of data feeds, and our forum choice not to put a taboo on the subject.

Agree also with Chris from Nailsea - my answer above is a general comment, with no presumption on the current case
