Having booked this yesterday at 1129, by 1757 I've had a message to say that it's now been cancelled. Lack of numbers maybe?  >:(

It's still being advertised on the FGW website.  Only if you click, 'Buy Tickets' do you learn of the cancellation. ::)

Off to social media to let 'em know.

The email I got from FGW doesn't mention the 50% off a future tour (but how many tours do they do, so it is really worth much?).

My guess would be lack of numbers. You would need a good show of interest to fill an HST to make it pay for itself.

Still on the FGW website AND I've just received FGW's latest 'Escape' e-newsletter and it's on there as well. Clearly one part of the FGW empire is not speaking to the other part.

Hi,

Firstly, thank you for pointing our that the "Dunster by Candlelight" is no longer running and that it is still be advertised on our website and by our Marketing Team. Although your earlier comments have now been passed to Marketing and Web Support managers, they do have various duties to balance at any one time and as such they simply may not have had time to amend the website yet.

That being said, I realise hat this does not create the best impression, so I have contacted them again. Please rest assured that they will amend this as soon as possible, but that it may not be with immediate effect.

Again, thank you for contacting me and bringing this to my attention,

Dave

Without wishing to detract from this thread.. "balancing duties" appears to be an FGW excuse that is starting to appear that I've not seen before.. It was used on me (on twitter) the other day for a reason a train alteration (that impacted quite a lot of people) wasn't shown on journeycheck.. Or maybe I'm just being cynical  ;D

It doesn't but take but a minute to go into your website back office to switch off a webpage, so sorry FGW not buying that one. I'm sure more than one person at FGW has access to their website back office.

Regards the e-newsletter. I guess it would depend when the decision was taken last week to cancel the train to Dunster. But ideally the newsletter should have been 'pulled' today had someone informed the marketing team that the train was no longer running.

Depends on who controls various pages of their site, some of which is handled by external agency(s).

I generally don't comment on the quality of the many press articles I quote on the Coffee Shop forum, but I must say that this is a particularly shoddy example - from This is the West Country (http://www.thisisthewestcountry.co.uk/news/somerset_news/11649545.Dunster_by_Candlelight_this_weekend/):

Dunster by Candlelight this weekend

First published Friday 5 December 2014 in Somerset

Dunster turns its back on the nuclear age by illuminating its quaint medieval streets by candlelight tomorrow (Friday) and Saturday.

A Lantern Lighting procession marks the start of the village^s 28th ^Dunster by Candlelight^ festival as it winds its way through the village from the Steep at 5.30pm.

During both evenings there will be a variety of street entertainers including carol singers, Morris dancers, handbell ringers and a fairground organ.

Dunster Castle is to be lit up by floodlights, creating a wash of colours on the castle walls (see above).

The Quantock Musical Theatre and Taunton Preparatory School choirs will be filling the halls with the sounds of carols.

The 17th Century stables will be filled with local crafts and food stall holders, with a chance to take out a hot drink or two, whilst the National Trust shop will be bursting with Christmas gift ideas and open until late over both nights.

West Somerset Railway will be bringing visitors from Bristol to Dunster and Minehead for the festival via steam train, calling at Nailsea and Backwell, Yatton, Worle, Weston-super-Mare, Highbridge, Bridgwater and Taunton.

There will be special coach links from outside Minehead railway station to and from Dunster Steep car park during the candlelight evenings when the roads into Dunster are closed.

Passengers alighting at Dunster station have a 20- minute walk to the event and are advised to take a torch.

Details about the First Great Western excursion train can be found (and bookings made) at firstgreatwestern.co.uk The annual festival, funded by Dunster traders and run by the Candlelight Committee, is held in aid of St Margaret^s Hospice.

The reader comments added to that press article say it all, really.  ::)

Oh dear. Not sure which is worse; the fact they published it or the fact they didn't pull it when it was shown to be incorrect.
