Quote
Sergeant Andy Roberts, from British Transport Police West Midlands, is asking for the public^s help to identify two men who forced a train into an emergency stop after the driver spotted them cutting down trees last month.

The driver of the 11.10AM Stratford-upon-Avon to Stourbridge Junction service was forced to activate the emergency brake when he spotted two men using chainsaws near Shirley Station on Monday 11th May.

Sergeant Roberts, said: ^The men were using chainsaws to cut down the trees and wearing noise-cancelling ear protectors making it impossible for them to hear oncoming trains.

They had no authority to be on the line, and were clearly risking their lives and the lives of everyone on the train which was forced to stop.

Remarkably, the men continued to chop down the trees after the train had come to a stop, but left the scene before police arrived.

However, the driver of the train was able to take a picture of the duo on his cameraphone.^

Officers have spoken to people in the area and contacted local businesses, but are continuing to make enquiries to to identify the men.

Sergeant Roberts, added: ^I cannot stress enough just how dangerous the actions of these men were.

Fortunately for them, the train driver acted quickly to bring the train to a halt. Had he not done so, we could have been dealing with a very serious incident indeed.

Trespass and obstruction of the railway is a serious matter. We need to find the men involved, please tell us who they are.^

Please call British Transport Police on 0800 40 50 40, or text 61016, quoting reference MSUB/B6 of 09/06/2015, if you have ANY information.

Shirley they must have twigged this was wrong?

Ladies and gentleman, richwarwicker is here all week. Try the chicken in a basket.  ;D

To be fair to RWW, I saw the mention of Shirley station and was immediately compiling a 'Shirley you can't be serious' type pun in my head...  :P

So why were they cutting down trees?   Looks like a missing story ...

Recent similar story on TV about trees being chopped down in Plymouth - theory is wood burning stoves as trees were selected for size!

At least they weren't wearing suspenders and a bra...

Trespass on the railway is clearly on offense, but in the spirit of recent discussions about ancient sounding offenses under the Railway Bylaws (obstruction of an engine etc), I wonder if there might be a case for a pre-railway mediaeval offense along the lines of "estover without royal warrant"?

And if people in Plymouth have been chopping down trees for their stoves, is that as case of estover in Estover- Estover being a suburb of Plymouth

Ash or beech, which can be burnt "green" for me.

I've heard they are reformed characters, having turned over a new leaf.

I lived in Shirley for much of my youth and family still inhabit this inglorious suburb.  The most amusing thing that ever happened was the naming of a Chinese Restaurant that opened in the 60s as the 'Shirley Temple'.  Not sure it has the same resonance to the under 60s.

That excitement tells you all.

I've heard of a mobile kebab wagon called Jason Donervan, but even that would go above many a young head.

It's a thing. Parks up by the Royal West of England Academy at the bottom of Whiteladies Road in Bristol. Outside what was once Habitat.

I've eaten food from the 'Jason Donervan' and I'm still alive to recount this anecdote .

I heard a (possibly apocryphal) tale of a hardware shop that closed down, and reopened as an curry house called the 'Nutsan Balti'.

In Nailsea's High Street, we have a curry restaurant called Posh Spice.  Years ago, Victoria Beckham's legal representatives sought (apparently unsuccessfully) to prevent them from so styling themselves.  ::)

Some 40 years ago I and a mate travelled around the Outer Hebrides - we took the sleeper from Euston and then the train down to Kyle for the ferry to Stornoway. We had some time to kill in Inverness on the way there and strolled around the town. In an arcade of shops at the north end of the bridge over the River Ness was the Ness Caf^...

In Backwell, Aimee took over a Threshers off licence a few years ago, and it is now called Aimees Wine House.

There's an Aimee's Wine House in Stoke Bishop, Bristol too.

I guess the name was chosen before the sad death of Amy Winehouse. The name does seem in poor taste now.

There are indeed two branches of Aimee's Wine House (http://www.aimeeswinehouseltd.co.uk/).

And, purely for the record, Amy Winehouse's battle with alcohol abuse was in the public domain for some time before her sad death.

That's nothing compared to the organisation whose offices I passed in Gloucester last week. If they were starting again, I guess they wouldn't call it Isis.

I see no issue with Aimee continuing to operate under the name. Had they change to name to cash in on the sad demise of Ms W, they probably would have lost their custom by now.

Let's not forget the famous West Asian vendor of dairy products: Cheeses of Nazareth.
