Title: Prize Picture Quiz Summer 2015 *QUIZ CLOSED*
Post by: JayMac on July 05, 2015, 15:14:36
A prize quiz running through until Sunday 2nd August 2015. Free to enter. Please read the rules carefully before submitting your entry.

There are 25 locations to identify with a bias toward First Great Western served locations, although there are others from across the UK.

There are two prizes on offer to the entries with the most correct answers. I've decided that this time the prizes will be in 'cash'. A ^20 uncrossed Postal Order for the winner, and a ^10 uncrossed Postal Order for the runner-up.

The Prize Picture Quiz will run for four weeks with a closing date of 11:59pm Sunday 2nd August 2015. The winner being announced on or after 3rd August 2015.

Images are all 800 pixels wide, and around 470 pixels depth. They are best viewed on a tablet, laptop or PC. Smartphone users may struggle to view them.

The topic is locked and answers can only be submitted as per the rules below.

Good luck!

Rules:

Entry: One entry per person. Multiple entries will be excluded. All entries to be submitted to bignosemac by Personal Message (PM). Please title your Personal Message (PM) "Prize Picture Quiz Summer 2015", then list your answers 1-25. Personal Messages (PM) can be sent by clicking on the speech bubble icon below bignosemac's profile picture or by using the forum's 'My Messages' button.

Closing Date: The last date for entries will be 11:59pm Sunday 2nd August 2015. Entries after that time will not be accepted.

Eligibilty: The quiz is open to all registered members of the Great Western Passengers' Forum (aka Coffee Shop). The forum's Administrators and Moderators are not eligible to enter.

Answers: All images are on/outside UK National Rail stations. Station locations must be named in full (i.e. Bristol would not be an acceptable answer when the image is of Bristol Parkway).

Winning Entry and runner-up: The winning entry and runner up will be the ones having the most correct answers. A list of correct answers will be provided to the forum's Administrator/Moderator team prior to the closing date. In the event of any ties, the tied entries will each be assigned a number by bignosemac, and an Administrator will pick one of those numbers at random. The Administrator will not be informed of the forum name or avatar of the tied entries. More than one random draw may be required to decide the winner and runner-up. Following completion of the quiz the list of correct answers and the forum names of the winner and runner-up will be posted on the prize quiz thread.

Prizes: First prize will be a ^20 uncrossed Postal Order. The runner up will receive a ^10 uncrossed Postal Order. These are cashable at any Post Office. The winner and runner-up will be required to provide address details by Personal Message (PM) to bignosemac and the prizes will be forwarded by 'Royal Mail Signed For' delivery. Prizes will be sent out on or after 3rd August 2015. Please allow up to 28 days for delivery. Address details supplied will not be published or stored and there is no requirement to provide your real name.

General: Outside of entry to the quiz and awarding of the prize, no correspondence will be entered into. The decisions of the Moderators and Administrators of this forum will be final. These General Terms and the Specific Rules shall be governed by and construed in accordance with English law and any dispute arising out of or in connection with them shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the English Courts.

A reminder that there is still plenty of time to complete and submit your entry to this prize quiz - good luck!

Just under two weeks to go. Get your entry in.  ;D

As a Coffee Shop forum administrator, I am not eligible to enter this quiz.  ;)

Which is probably just as well: so far, after repeatedly looking at bignosemac's pictures, I've now definitely identified all ... erm, well, four of them, actually.  ::) :-[ :P

Please do send in your entry!  ;D

Title: Re: Prize Picture Quiz Summer 2015
Post by: Chris from Nailsea on July 23, 2015, 23:52:30
One of the moderators (not bignosemac, obviously!) has now claimed another four - so, between us on the admin team, we've now possibly managed to identify a mere 8 / 25.  :P

Good luck with your entry - the closing date is 2 August 2015.  ;)

Title: Re: Prize Picture Quiz Summer 2015
Post by: JayMac on July 24, 2015, 08:58:25
Just a reminder that the aim is not to get all 25. I know there's some real tough ones in there. As many as you can answer/guess and you may get a bit of dosh!

Title: Re: Prize Picture Quiz Summer 2015
Post by: bobm on July 25, 2015, 17:57:14
Been looking at these again and upped my score a little (not that I can enter of course).  ;D

It is going to rain (again) tomorrow - so if you're stuck indoors - give it a go!

I, on the other hand, will be out and about - delivering, and getting wet (again).  Thanks, Bob!  ::)

An update for you, from the combined efforts of three administrators and a moderator on the Coffee Shop forum:

Between the four of us, we have probably managed to identify 16 out of the 25 locations - although one of our claims is only a 'possible' as we have a split decision on that one!  ::)

As 'bignosemac' has already pointed out - you really don't need to be able to identify all 25 locations.  Please do submit your entry, with however many you are able to place!   ;) :D ;D

Title: Re: Prize Picture Quiz Summer 2015
Post by: JayMac on July 28, 2015, 19:02:19
With less than a week to go I've only received three entries. If it stays like that two of them are guaranteed a prize.  :-\

Title: Re: Prize Picture Quiz Summer 2015
Post by: Chris from Nailsea on July 28, 2015, 22:01:38
To update (and hopefully encourage) our readers, I can now tell you that the collective suggestions of the admin / moderator team have been 'marked' by bignosemac (behind the scenes, as we are all ineligible to enter the quiz).

Apparently, between the four of us, we actually managed to get 12 out of the 25 correct.  There are some fiendishly difficult ones in there, quite obviously.  :P ::) ;D

So, just to emphasize, you really don't have to get all 25 answers: please do submit your entry, with as many locations as you can.  Any 'guesses' do not incur any penalty if they are wrong - it's simply the total number of correct answers in your entry which counts!

Good luck!  ;D

Title: Re: Prize Picture Quiz Summer 2015
Post by: Chris from Nailsea on July 29, 2015, 23:09:46
I have now received news that the number of entries submitted has risen to four: while I obviously wouldn't want to see anyone's chances of winning a prize be diminished by further entries, those chances are still rather high!  :P

Please do get your entry in - the odds on winning something are so much better than the lottery!  ;D

There is still time to enter this quiz:

There are two prizes on offer to the entries with the most correct answers ... the prizes will be in 'cash'. A ^20 uncrossed Postal Order for the winner, and a ^10 uncrossed Postal Order for the runner-up.

... and it doesn't cost you anything to enter - simply send a PM with your answers to 'bignosemac'.  ;)

Nothing ventured, nothing gained!

Found a bit of spare time to go through the entries and I can now announce the prize winners...

Winner: Adelante_CCT with 7 out of 25. Wins a ^20 Postal Order.

Runner up: AMLAG with 5 out of 25. Wins a ^10 Postal Order.

They have both been contacted by Personal Message (PM) to arrange delivery of prizes.

The thread is now unlocked. Before I provide the full list of answers I'll open the quiz to the forum just for fun. Feel free to guess the locations. As many or as few as you want.

The ones I had my doubts over were:

5 - Southend Airport
20 - Swindon

As for the rest...  ;D

Well I am surprised about that, I certainly don't get out and about as much as I used to and felt sure that a few others would get a much higher score than me! To be honest some of them were simply processes of elimination. I haven't been told which ones were correct but here were some of my guesses and reasons for them
3 = Manchester Piccadilly, not many other places where a FTPE crosses paths with a Pendolino.
5 = Luton, somewhere an EMT stops underneath the wires, this led to Luton Airport which is a newer station than that and Bedford which I believe it not to be from memory.
17 = Queens Park, my first thoughts were somewhere south of London but then I noticed what appears to be the infamous shed that you pass through when heading north of Queens Park station
21 = Orpington, my first thought was Bromley South but then I realised there were more than 4 platforms, which to my knowledge Orpington is the only station on the SouthEastern network (outside London) other than Ashford (which I knew it was not) to have more than 4 platforms.
22 = Taunton, I'm not sure if this is correct but I always remember it as having a canopy on the outer platform(s) with no cover on the middle line platforms.

Here are my thoughts:

2 - Reading
3 - Manchester Piccadilly
4 - Manchester Oxford Road
5 - Sheffield
7 - Bristol Temple Meads
8 - London Blackfriars
13 - Pewsey
15 - Bridgwater
18 - Warminster
21 - Bromley South
22 - Taunton

I have reserve guesses for 3 answers also

My guesses (many of which were wild, and some of which I now know are wrong since answer have started being issued) would probably have been:
1. London Bridge
3. Manchester Piccadilly through platforms (probably my most confident answer)
4. Bridgend
8. London Euston
10. Neath
11. Salisbury
15. Thurso
20. Westbury
22. Bridgewater
23. Church Stretton
24. Lymington Town

I couldn't even guess at the rest. EDIT: looks like I only got 4/25 correct.

Yes, that is correct - and it was one of the four that I managed to identify correctly.  As our readers will know by now, I'm something of an expert at spotting pictures of Taunton ...  :P ::)

That was, I think, the hardest of the lot. Nice to see the Wales & West (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wales_and_West) logo still out in the wild! It's only been 14 years since the demise of that franchise...

A friend works for the company who's advertising boarding is on the building in the background. Being a Newquay based taxi and bus firm it seemed an obvious guess to me.

I am kicking myself ! I was in (at?) Cromer station last Wednesday taking pictures from the opposite side of the platform...the posters, the natty shelter over the ATM, the signal box... the lot....but did I recognise it from the reverse shot ?? No. Kick! kick! kick!

I thought it was a brilliant quiz. Too easy, and we'd all be moaning, too hard and we'd still be moaning ! I, for one appreciate all the time and effort BNM puts in on our behalf to exercise our grey matter, and join in the positive comments relating to his stint as a moderator.

I might only have got 2 right ...but was particularly pleased to have identified Church Stretton !
Kicks discontinued !
