Title: Call for return of rails to Buntingford
Post by: grahame on October 06, 2015, 05:20:47
From the Hertfordshire Mercury (http://www.hertfordshiremercury.co.uk/Idea-new-railway-line-Buntingford-forward-MP-Sir/story-27899290-detail/story.html)

Buntingford could see the return of a railway system, with its MP pushing for it to be considered in transport discussions.

A light railway line linking the town to stations such as Royston or Stevenage has been put forward to Hertfordshire County Council by the MP for North East Hertfordshire, Sir Oliver Heald.

The council is currently developing a long-term transport vision for the county, and Mr Heald hopes his proposals for Buntingford will get the go-ahead.

Buntingford was the terminus of a branch off the Hertford East Branch, opened 3 July 1863 and closed to passengers on 16 November 1964. It was served by direct trains from London Liverpool Street until around 1960. Parts of the trackbed have been used as parts of the footpath network and Buntingford Station is being redeveloped into housing.  The new proposal appears to be a complete new light railway.

I wish them all the best for the re-opening - if only because 'Buntingford' is such a quaint name for a branch line (which I didn't even know about, before grahame posted!).  ::)

Before our recent street party I was asked if I liked bunting. My answer, that I had never bunted, was not fully understood.

Worse happened when I was asked if I liked Dickens...

If there is a Buntingford Revival Campaign, I shall make a small donation.
