They have announced plans to roll out more than 700 buses with fuel-efficient engines across the UK by 2009.

The company was unable to confirm how many new buses would be seen on Bath's roads, but promised all of its operating regions would be receiving the new vehicles.

Passengers in the city are likely to find out how they will benefit from the latest investment when the operator provides official distribution numbers next month.

A FirstGroup spokesman said:

"This is great news for the people of Bath because it is investment in the community.

"There will not be a sharp hike in ticket prices as a result."
