Title: St Philip's Marsh Depot Open Day and Coffee Shop forum meetup, Bristol, 2 May 2016
Post by: JayMac on January 26, 2016, 16:47:51
I've read on another forum that St Phillips Marsh Depot will be open to the public on Bank Holiday Monday 2nd May 2016. This is in conjunction with the 40th anniversary of the HST entering passenger service.

Mention also that the first production power car, 43002, will be repainted in a historic livery.

No confirmation of any of this bar mention of 'internal sources', so no further details as yet.

Anyone here know more?

It is also a racing certainty that 'the Green One' will also be on display.

in conjunction with the 40th anniversary of the HST entering passenger service ...[snip]... the first production power car, 43002, will be repainted in a historic livery.
I hope the 'historic livery' will be the 'famous first livery', ie. not the actual first livery with black but the blue and grey with the yellow end wraping-round onto the sides. And, to continue a discussion from the 'Advent Quiz' topic:

And it's my favourite Class 43 power car - 43003 Isambard Kingdom Brunel
I hope that one is preserved, including the nameplates, along with a few other members of the class and some mrk3s to run with them.
Hear, Hear! Just name 43002 'Sir Kenneth Grange' to honour the HST designer and retain 43002/3 in preservation as a pair.
I'd suggest 43002 in Blue & Grey with Sir Kenneth Grange nameplates and the original engine paired with the prototype 'Project Miller' powercar, although you'd have to come up with a clever coach livery to allow the blue and grey to reverse partway down the rake, and 43003 Isambard Kingdom Brunel paired with 43154 INTERCITY (https://www.flickr.com/photos/37190-dalzell/11781896166/) in Swallow livery but with their current MTU engines (and 43003 keeping his* nameplates, even though I don't think it had them before 'barbie' came along).

I would be pretty sure that some HSTs would make it into preservation, based on the history of larger classes.  Being able to have them run as they were in their prime (at up to 125 m.p.h, in 2+8 formation) might be a bit of an ask.  Although they've got pretty good route availability, 2+2 from Lydney to Parkend, each car in a different livery and with paint flaking, would be a sad shadow of their former glory.
Maybe preserved IC125s wouldn't get to 125mph very often, but mainline certified steam locos can still get up a respectable speed (and Bittern was allowed up to 90mph to mark the special occasion of the A4 reunion and Mallard's record anniversary). I think with IC125 it is a choice of whether you preserve as a mainline-certified beast or just as a static exhibit, heritage railways are not really well suited. If static, you only need to preserve one mark 3, whereas you'd need at least 5 mrk3s (TGS-TS-TS-Buffet-FO) for it to look sensible if you're running it. With preserved locos, you want to run them with appropriate stock, so a 91 would need mrk4s** (similarly for steam, you want mrk1s or early mrk2s, anything newer like mrk2 air-cons doesn't give the right feel, a class 86 is easier as at looks at home on mrk1s, early mrk2s, mrk3s and air-con mrk2 stock).

* Male pronoun used because I.K.B. was a man, and surely a loco named after a man can hence be refered to using a male pronoun
** Is there an IC225 equivalent of the 125 group, because if so I might be interested in joining.

...or they could paint it apple green and fit German-style smoke deflectors.  :)

Why would anyone do that? Assuming we're talking about the Flying Whatsit (as I think you called LNER steam loco 4472), not only is the combination of apple green and smoke deflectors historically incorrect (I think, I'm not an expert on its history), but the smoke deflectors make the loco look wrong so you'd only put them on if you were trying to be historically accurate.

But anyway, your point (relating to IC125s) is?

If you are refering to having 43003 carrying his name in a previous livery, I'd argue it makes more alot more sense than what has happened with the class 91s, where 91002 was 'Durham Cathedral' but that name is now carried by 91014 and 91001 (original name: 'Swallow') is now running around with 'Flying Scotsman' nameplates. Also, I think some previously nameless steam locomotives have been named after preservation.

According to the 'UK HST Enthusiast Group' on Facebook, Mark Hopwood made an announcement today (28/01) confirming this open day at SPM on 2nd May.

No idea where and to whom this announcement was made. Haven't been able to corroborate online.

Is the depot hard to get to on foot from Temple Meads then (don't know Bristol at all well)?

I'm not sure that ^13.99 is al that steep - just think how many separate adults could get in for the price of (say) an adult anytime return ticket from Bristol to London.

From the Great Western Railway press invite:

GWR to name train after Royal British Legion branch

In honour of both the former St Silas Church on Feeder Road and the Royal British Legion branch of the same name, GWR will name a Class 08 (08 663) ^St Silas^ on Monday 11 April.

The St Silas Royal British Legion branch takes its name from the church which was destroyed 75 years ago when the Luftwaffe bombed the depot in 1941.

In attendance will be members of the Royal British Legion alongside GWR staff who will carry out the naming.

The naming is taking place in the build up to the St Philips Marsh Open Day being held on Monday 2 May 2016 which will see a unique collection of both diesel locomotives. There will be a unique line up of High Speed Train locomotives from operators across the UK and an unveiling of a unique livery and train naming in honour of Sir Kenneth Grange, designer of the HST.

Guests will be arriving from 1000 for refreshments prior to the naming at 1100.

So now it is a 'unique' livery rather than a 'heritage' one, and named 'Sir Kenneth Grange' rather than 'Bristol St Philips Marsh'. Or maybe there's going to be both, and I'm starting to wonder whether 'heritage' means GWR green (as on 57604 pendennis castle, not the new GWR green) rather than a livery IC125s have carried in the past.

I've not decided yet whether I want to go, a bit expensive if the weather turns out to be terrible I'm thinking.

Wonder what their definition of 'laden' is.

To me, laden means loaded with passengers. But that is indefinite. So I guess in this context, it means 'in service'? Otherwise how do they easily know how many are aboard without a physical count?

I suspect it has to mean one or more passengers. That being a timetabled passenger service. An ECS move, as is scheduled on 2nd May would be fine.

I can only assume it means that work needs to be done at Trowbridge station before Class 165/166s can enter passenger service on that line.

Just as well as the line between Wootton Bassett and Swindon is closed that weekend while work to replace the bridges over Rodbourne Road near the Swindon Outlet centre are replaced.

So a reminder if you are going to the Open Day from the east there are buses from Swindon and longer journey times (but at least no buses) if coming from Reading.

Pic shows L to R Jon Tipler, Mike Muddle of the RBL and GWR Driver Operations Manager Simon Cassidy

GWR today, 11 April 2016, named one of their Class 08 shunting locomotives St Silas, after the church of the same name.

The St Silas church, which was situated on Feeder Road, was destroyed 75  years ago on 3 January 1941 during a bombing raid by the Luftwaffe. Over 140 Bristolians perished that night as German airmen attempted to hit the Railway and Docks area of the city. The St Silas name lives on through the local Royal British Legion Branch and now on locomotive 08 663.

Simon Cassidy, Driver Operations Manager, said: ^The Royal British Legion do a fantastic job in supporting countless people affected by service for their country. We are proud that this locomotive will serve as a tribute to the work of the Legion and in remembrance to those who lost their lives on that fateful evening.^

Mike Muddle, Chairman of the St Silas Branch of the Royal British Legion said: ^We are thrilled that GWR have decided to name this locomotive after our branch and the church. The links between the railway and the forces has always been strong and this naming will see this tradition continue.^

The naming is part of a build up to the St Philips Marsh Open Day on 2 May 2016 which will celebrate 40 Years of the High Speed Train (Class 43). The Open Day will see one of the largest gatherings of diesel locomotives from around the country. Present on the day will also be Sir Kenneth Grange, the designer of the Class 43, who will name a locomotive and special livery.

The Coffee Shop forum meet-up in the Knights Templar (J D Wetherspoon) near Bristol Temple Meads is open to anyone - members or non-member readers of this forum.

Purely for your ease of identification of any group from the Coffee Shop forum who will be in the Knights Templar, I shall wear my habitual hi-viz vest:

My colleague bignosemac will no doubt be wearing his trademark cloth cap.  ::)

Either way, you will be able to avoid us easily, if you so wish.  :-X

Don't you have a better quality hi-viz bib these days, Chris?

Surely being a 'partner' and all that...

And yes, I shall be readily identifiable, both in SPM and the Knights Templar, by my grey flat cap and big nose.

43002 is currently in traffic with the start of her re-livery back to BR blue and yellow.

Currently sporting a yellow cab roof, back to the bulkhead. Black roof and BR blue on the exhaust slats on the body sides below the roof line. The rest of the body has been scraped/sanded and prepped ready for the final painting and vinyl application.

Why would what we presume may be a class 08 need to take a class 57 off the back of the sleeper?

I think the 15mph is a bit misleading - probably just a 57 LE move off the back of the sleeper.

The top link DID link to another '15 mph' service which was timed to run from the depot and arrive Bristol in behind the sleeper around 02:30 IIRC. Although this has now been removed.

Indeed: I've been invited to a 'special press preview' - which I am unfortunately unable to attend, due to my being working that morning:

Quote
Special Press Preview

You are invited to attend a special press preview of the St Philips Marsh Open Day ... on Bank Holiday Monday, 2 May.

Celebrating the 40th year of the Intercity 125, on display will be a mix of diesel and steam traction and a unique line-up of High Speed Trains from operators all over the country. Sir Kenneth Grange, designer of the HST, will also attend to unveil a special locomotive at 11:30.

I really do hope the weather stays fine for all you lucky people attending that day: it seems to be a grand day out!  ;) :D ;D

Just booked mine- there are still over 1000 available- kids tickets are getting a bit low though- 130 left, but I'm wondering if these figures are simply so that Eventbrite's systems can function, rather than actual maximum capacity. We waited till the weather forecast was published- it's looking fairly good, a few showers around, but certainly not a wash out. I may regret bringing a 2 year old though  ;) He's more of a bus enthusiast. Fortunately he no longer needs his pushchair, and will be fine on his reins.

From my inbox, a message from the event organiser:

Quote
A Message from Ann Ramsey:  Apologies if you receive this more than once.

Dear Open Day Visitors,

Not long to go now, just a quick update and a few reminders.

First of all the GWR organisers have asked me to send you the following:

"Unfortunately due to various operational issues beyond our control, Rood Ashton Hall, The Earl of Mount Edgcumbe and Tangmere will not be appearing at the St Philips Marsh Open Day. However LMS locomotive, Royal Scot, is already at the depot and will be part of the Open Day. Some other exhibits may also not be the specific locomotive previously advertised. We hope this will not dampen your enjoyment of what will be a fantastic day".

Special Livery Unveiling: This is planned for approximately 11.30

Tickets: Please bring your ticket in either paper form or on your mobile phone.

Payment at the gate is by CASH only, Nearest ATM is at nearby Sainsburys store.

Travelling to the event:

Free shuttle bus every 15 minutes from Bristol Temple Meads, most are fully accessible and there are many public buses running along A4 Bath Road, adjacent to Albert Road.

Parking: There is no parking on the site. Bristol Wholesale Fruit Market (BS2 0YQ) is ^3 all day and there are stewards on site. Look for signs on Albert Road and for walking directions to the event.

Parking for disabled and people with mobility needs is best in Avon Meads Retail Park. Avon Street, (BS2 0SP)Park at the SHOWCASE CINEMA end, with access along a small road which is also the KFC drive thru, so please take care. Look for the signs and  Stewards will able to help and give guidance.

Food and Drink: Various caterers will be at the event, but bringing your own food is acceptable.

Stalls: Over 20 will be attending selling all types of rail related items and goodies.

Raffle: There will be a Springboard raffle at ^5 per ticket, 1st Prize a 2 hour session on the Rail Simulator in the GWR Training School, date TBA, and a few other prizes. We are also hoping to hold a Silent Auction for a few special bits and pieces.

Programmes: Individually numbered limited edition of 2000 commemorative programmes, with a mug and a pin badge are on sale at ^15 each. Mugs are also available to buy seperately at ^5 each.

Safety: Venue is  working rail depot and some areas will be on uneven terrain so please wear appropriate footwear.

Weather: It might be wet and a bit windy; enough said!

Enjoyment: Expected and encouraged!

I'll do my best to help with any queries. See you all Monday.

Best regards,

Ann

I'm a bit concerned at the suggestion of parking at Avonmeads Retail Park. This may be the domain of a Private Parking Company and there may well be 'rules' on time limits and using the car park only for visiting the stores/restaurants etc therein. I hope permission has been sought.

I can't but help think that if regular rail passengers had three out of four advertised trains cancelled / withdrawn at the last minute, there would be all hell to pay. The fact that these changes can be made just a couple of days ahead is testament to the good nature of the 'enthusiast' (used in its widest sense) community and to just how commonplace changes are to special services / heritage operations.

As a daily commuter who uses GWRs services, take it from me that the scenario you describe is far from unusual! (however we rely on them to get to work and home again afterwards, not just to look at, hence a bit harder to be "good natured" in those circumstances!)  - have a good day all, and enjoy a few ales afterwards! I will be at Twickenham, hopefully watching the Senior Service beat Fiji 2nd XV!  :)

9 vehicles in a HST set used to be quite common in BR/GWT/FGW days, with a 2+7 consist.

I doubt there's ever been a 5+4 consist before!

Looking forward to this one tomorrow, the bus from Swindon not so much though.  ;D ::)

There's been a great deal of positive feedback about the rail replacement services during "TPOD"s (Total Period of Disruption, as I recall) and indeed a good job has been done.   Alas, less so today.

I had been hoping to come along, but I'm at work until 13:30 ... and the first service offered to me thereafter is the 13:48 from Melksham, getting me to Temple Meads at 16:09 ... 141 minutes including 2 buses and 52 minutes between them to enjoy Chippenham Station.    My very final service back is the the 19:00, dropping me off at Melksham Station at 21:25 - that's 145 minutes;  I could travel back at 18:45 in a mere 63 minutes.

If the meet up were tomorrow, the 14:30 would get me to BRI at 15:40 and the 18:52 back would have me in MKM at 19:46 - still not brilliant when compared to the next town of Bradford-on-Avon from where (today) the 14:22 gets to Bristol at 14:48 and the 19:22 return gets back at 19:46.

If I'm feeling up to it, I may d-r-i-v-e to B-o-A ... otherwise I'll wish you a good one and say "sorry to have missed the meet".

Why aren't trains reversing at Chippenham from the West today?   Other engineering work taking advantage of the closure at Swindon, perhaps??

Wow, the queues to get in at 10:30 this morning! Right back to the roundabout by the fruit & veg market. But all credit to the organisers, it moved, and quickly. Spent a great morning there, and just about managed a bacon butty before the rain came. Spent a bit of time explaining to the little one why we were allowed on the tracks today, when I've always given him the lecture about keeping off  ;) He was more fascinated by the Pandrol clips than the rolling stock, because we have one at home used as a bookend. All in, well worth the trip.

I'd love to know the grand total raised for Springboard today- it must be a sizeable amount.

The forecast on the BBC weather site when I looked yesterday morning was awful between the times I thought I might be there, so I decided to give it a miss.

For those that went, did this
Noteworthy are the appearances by HST prototype 41001 and 43040 'Bristol St Philips Marsh' in original BR HST livery. Hope the latter keeps that livery in traffic for a while.
turn out to be a red herring or was 43040 present as well? If so, was it still in standard FirstGW blue?

43002 looks rather good (thanks for the quick photo uploads folks), although I'm not sure about the nameplate (great choice of name, but the livery doesn't really leave space for such a plate). I see the number is now much less obvious, like with the GWR green power cars .

The nameplate is actually the correct colour, size and position for the original BR blue livery.

I have rather a lot of pictures from the day. I'll upload some tomorrow after I've taken time to find the best.

The rain had me heading back to Swindon early, but I was punished with a 150 unit failure at Temple Meads and congestion on the M4 for not heading to the spoons meetup. This was my first time at a depot open day / event and I found it really fun.

Here's most of the photos I grabbed today, some need work, but some I'm fairly happy with.  ;D

Some cracking pictures there TomL.

I particularly like the ones which have candidly caught other visitors. It's not all about getting the perfect 3/4 shot of a loco with no interlopers. They can be somewhat clinical shots.

Had I had a camera with decent depth of field capabilities I'd have been looking to get similar shots.

Modern accessibility regulations prevent the Mk3s from having the full original livery. Doors are required to have a contrasting colour to the body colour. Derogations are allowed for heritage vehicles, but not those in regular passenger service on the network.

So whilst a set of Mk3s could be painted blue and grey, the doors would have to be a different colour, which would rather spoil the authenticity.

Really? Or does that not apply until 1st Jan 2020 (when the current Mrk3s doors won't be compliant anyway, even if painted a contrasting colour)? After all, Chiltern painted their 'Banbury commuter set' in BR blue/grey (with Chiltern logos) for a while, even though every other TOC (Eurostar excepted, until recently) were going for contrasting doors.

Passenger carrying rail vehicles built before 1999 have to comply with the Rail Vehicle Accessibility Regulations (RVAR) 2010 if and when they are refurbished. Prior to 2010 they had to comply with RVAR 1998 if and when they were refurbished.

Both those regulations are legal requirements that stipulate contrasting doors. The 1998 regulations also apply to new vehicles built after 31st December 1998.

For vehicles built since 2010 the newer European legislation, the Technical Specification for Interoperability for Persons with Reduced Mobility (PRM TSI) applies. This legislation also requires contrasting doors.

As well as new rail vehicles, RVAR 2010 and the PRM TSI also apply to older rail vehicles (those introduced prior to 1999) when they undergo refurbishment.

That's interesting. I guess there have been quite a few derrogations granted for this rule then, as quite a few refurbishments haven't made stock fully compliant. As well as IC125s, I think most TOCs have refurbished Sprinters without fitting fully-compliant toilets for example.

They still have contrasting doors though....
Which are you refering too? Chiltern's first repaint of their 'Banbury commuter set' certainly didn't have contrasting door colours (despite the contrasting DVT) (https://www.flickr.com/photos/ash_3939/14826444590). Not my pic by the way.

It makes sense to do what can be done to comply with regulations during a refurbishment. So door contrasts, wheelchair spaces etc.

Toilets are more problematical (and costly).

They will of course have to be done by 2020 if the vehicles are intended to be used in passenger service beyond then. Even then, a Secretary of State can grant derogations if needed.

Now, back on topic. Shortly posting some images from the open day...

I believe the mainline white/grey (as on some of Chiltern's 168s, not quite the same as the silver set livery) now being applied to the Banbury set is the second repaint Chiltern has done. Originally, some of them were in the old Virgin livery (again not mine) (https://www.flickr.com/photos/36593372@N04/7061954425) and the others had 'InterCity' on them, Chiltern then standardised the rake into blue & grey but with Chiltern logos instead of 'InterCity', I assume by repainting the Virgin ones and removing the 'InterCity' from the others.

Although I have gone off at a bit of a tangent, it is somewhat relevant to this topic since somebody said they would like to see a whole set done in blue & grey to match 43002, which was of course released at the open day. My point was that, since Chiltern appear to have painted coaches in non-compliant livery in the relatively recent past and the set will presumably be retired from mainline service before full compliance is manditory, a full blue & grey rake is perhaps not completely impossible, although unlikely because it would cost money.

The painting into silver was always planned - not sure whether the old Virgin coaches were replaced by other blue/grey ones, rather than repainted - quite possibly, they do own many more that are still in storage - but maybe if not, they were able to get a short derogation as silver was always going to happen, and indeed, nearly now finished.

4700 attendance apparently. 3800 pre-sales and 900 gate tickets. ^14 per adult ticket. Added to that, commerative goody bags at ^15. 2000 of those.

Grapevine on the day suggested corporate donations from other train operators whose locos were there. Pitch fees from the railwayana stands and catering outlets are also, I believe, going to Springboard Opportunity Group.

RAIL Magazine  (http://www.railmagazine.com/news/network/2016/05/04/5-000-visitors-salute-the-high-speed-train-at-st-philips-marsh-open-day) is suggested a figure of ^20,000.

Quote
The 40th anniversary of the High Speed Train was celebrated at an open day at St Philips Marsh depot on May 2.

The open day attracted 5,000 visitors, with funds raised donated to Springboard Opportunity Group. GWR spokesman Dan Panes told RAIL that more than ^20,000 was likely to have been raised at the event.

Also at the open day, Colas Rail 47749 was renamed City of Truro, albeit without ceremony. The locomotive, one of a batch of ^47s^ delivered to the Western Region, carried that name from June 8 1965 until October 1988. Colas removed the Demelza name it had carried since September 2007 in favour of its original name.

GWR also displayed examples of its fleet, with Classes 08, 43, 57, 150, 158 and 166 attending the event, along with main line and preserved locomotives, many of which were regular visitors to Bristol.

For more on the event, and a list of what attended the open day, read RAIL 800, published on May 11.

I'm amused at the level of detail that went into 43002's repaint.  The original 'Guard' sign on the power car door has been recreated - even if it was only accurate for a very short time until the Guard's were moved from this very noisy compartment to the TGS.  Hope nobody goes looking there for a guard!

Comment on why the whole set wasn't painted from Rail Magazine (http://www.railmagazine.com/news/fleet/2016/05/19/gwr-explains-blue-and-grey-mk-3-decision)

Quote
Great Western Railway^s plans to repaint a full rake of Mk 3s in blue and grey, to match 43002 Sir Kenneth Grange, were scuppered by the need to comply with Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) rules

With a well informed commentator suggesting

Quote
Err.. DDA was repealed by the Equality Act in 2010. Also is the Rail Vehicle Accessibility Regulations 2010 and the Rail Vehicle Accessibility (Interoperable Rail System) Regulations 2008 that apply to pre-1998 rolling stock if and when they are refurbished, which would include re-livery.

The relative cost of painting one carriage versus a whole set wasn't mentioned, but I suppose that's simply not relevant if it would be illegal.  And the odd train needs repainting from time to time, even if most have now had their final refurb.

The article also says:

Under DDA rules, doors must be a different colour scheme to that of the main bodyside, so that they are distinguishable to passengers with visibility problems.

Which has prompted the comment:

Quote
I suspect doors are differently coloured to assist passengers with vision, rather than visibility, problems. If any GWR passengers have, indeed, developed invisibility, we should like a photograph ;-)

From my contact at Great Western Railway:

Quote
Over £25,000 raised by Bristol Depot Open Day

Great Western Railway’s open day at their St Philips Marsh depot, Bristol, has raised more than £25,000 for a local charity.

Announced at Springboard’s Autumn Ball at Cadbury House Country Club, GWR Driver Operations Manager Simon Cassidy presented a cheque for £26,000 to Springboard’s Joint CEO and a founding parent, Ann Ramsey.

Ann said: “This is a first for us and a truly staggering amount of money. By helping to raise funds for and promoting Springboard and the needs of disabled children, GWR are helping to break down barriers and assumptions. GWR really have pulled out all the stops to make the open day a memorable one and the money raised shows how successful it was. Springboard are proud to have been part of the open day and we are amazed and delighted by the interest shown by the public.”

Springboard is a north Somerset charity providing support for children with disabilities from birth to aged 5.

The depot opened up its doors to the general public in May in celebration of the 40th year of the Intercity 125 train, and unveiled a specially liveried locomotive in honour of the train’s designer Sir Kenneth Grange. On display was a range of both steam and diesel locomotives, including Intercity 125 High Speed Train locomotives from all over the country.

Driver Operations Manager Simon Cassidy said: “Committed to the communities we serve, we have long-supported Springboard and it is fantastic to have raised such an impressive amount. We at GWR are only too aware of the vital role rail has played and continues to play for the local and national economy. To have people queuing to enter the depot and see how it operates day-to-day, and to see such a selection of trains, is humbling.”

Members of the public were offered the opportunity to look inside the depot buildings and get a flavour of the work that is carried out 24 hours a day to help maintain, refuel and clean the GWR fleet. Tickets were made available by GWR with all proceeds from the event being donated to Springboard.

Children at Springboard may have a wide range of disabilities including: autism; cerebral palsy; complex health and medical needs; Down’s syndrome; sensory impairments; language and communication difficulties.
