Title: Badger, badger, badger, badger, badger, badger spotted in Weston-super-Mare
Post by: JayMac on February 05, 2016, 21:08:41
Spotted this one in WSM tonight:

I was unaware that First had a bus trundling around in this great livery from the past. A bit of research and I discover it was painted in August 2015 to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the founding of Badgerline buses.

As for my choice of thread title...

That's a new one on me. I thought it might be a reference to: https://youtu.be/wOSseI1hao8

As for the livery, yes it's nice but I'm slightly worried by the concept of bus nostalgia.  :o

It's rather bizarre, but I guess everyone needs a hobby! 😉

Presactly. Any of us who may on occasion have been seen out, perhaps wearing a warm waterproof coat, maybe with a thermos, possibly on a railway station platform and perhaps tending towards one end of it or the other, may feel that it scarce behoves us to cast mastershalums about other peoples' hobbies...  8)

Edit: typo

I will say this for Badgerline, they were a good innovative bus company. They then became First following a merger with Grampian Regional Transport and that's when things went down hill. First's main focus understandably turned to running rail companies where there was more money.

.......having said that however, one can't be too careful!  ;)

Isn't that the fond memories of those in many rural areas who used to have a bus service?  ::)

From the BBC (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-35489514):

Quote
Council cuts 'threat' to rural bus services

Many rural bus services in England and Wales face being wiped out by council budget cuts, campaigners have warned.

Research by the Campaign for Better Transport says subsidies to routes have been reduced by ^78m since 2010, with another ^27m under threat this year.

It likens the situation to the cuts to about a third of the rail network made on the back of a report by Dr Beeching in the 1960s.

Councils say "difficult decisions" are being made amid government cuts.

The Campaign for Better Transport says reductions in local authority funding had already resulted in thousands of bus services being reduced or cancelled in recent years.

According to its research, people in Lincolnshire, Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Somerset, Dorset, West Berkshire, Wiltshire, Oxfordshire, Hertfordshire, North Yorkshire and Lancashire will be among the worst affected.

My highlighting. CfN.

Good point, certainly. I meant nostalgia for bygone liveries, models, and small aspects of bus services. Fondly remembering the days when there was a bus service is a different matter.  :-[

Agreed.   First Bus, certainly in Bath, are shocking.  The route I catch daily has recently gained competition from the A4 Bristol Airport service.  It is startling how much better those buses are than the First ones - better maintained, better driven, politer drivers, cleaner buses, better time keeping and cheaper.  I am not the only person who lets a First bus go past on principle.

It might be the lighting but the yellow looks a bit too luminous ;) judging completely from memory of course! As a small boy I definitely preferred when my father worked for Badgerline compared to First.. mainly because everything had badgers on it. The First logo - a condor - was a bit too streamlined, modern and inanimate for my liking (took me a few years to realise it was an F  :-[ )

Never realised it was a condor ...only ever saw the stylised 'F'. Wouldn't an albatross be a more appropriate logo for First ?

Just to be clear as far as I know it isn't actually a condor - that is just what my eyes saw at the time before I finally realised it was the f that it is meant to be.

Maybe it was a vulture?  ;)

The Badger song and the video: badger, badger, badger, badger, badger, badger, MUSHROOM! It's a bit, erm, trippy, isn't it?

There is apparently a similar 'urban myth' about Puff the Magic Dragon (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b57aYTJEZbI) - disproved, to my satisfaction, on youtube.  ;) :D ;D

I always associate Puff the Magic Dragon with the Nailsworth valley, particularly approached from the south on the A46. It works best on a day with low-lying mist. As children we used to sing it there. Back then we thought it was just a song about a dragon, roaring and scaring pirate ships, a big adventure. A little later the element of growing up was apparent too. And the 'puff'? I dunno if that's just coincidence, or if not, was it incorporated into the song or did the terms arise from the song?

In any case, hopefully none of that applies to anyone while they're driving a bus, whatever line they're working for.

A better version of the 'Badger' song. Although I would say that seeing as it features my mate Brian May!
