2 Bristol Parkway

That's what gave the game away - that, and the fact that I walked past that sign, yet again, only a couple of weeks ago.  ;) :D ;D

5.  Taunton.  ::)

Both correct.

But no. 2 is not Bristol Parkway, and no. 3 is not Swindon.

P.S.  - did you spot something odd about the Cheltenham Spa display?

You mean that the second train is timed before the first, and both are on time? I've seen odder things than that on platform CISs.

Nope, not Reading !!

That's what I noticed ... it seemed that time travel had reached Gloucestershire, and I wondered if it related to the trains being in a different order when they passed through Standish Junction.

3 Chippenham?

Title: Re: Knowing the signs

3 Chippenham?

Correct ... with a rather unusual diversion to Bristol Parkway of a train that would have gone to South Wales if the tunnel had been open.

My first thought was Trowbridge with a Portsmouth to Cardiff being terminated at Bristol Parkway until I spotted the "First Class at the REAR"

Now there's a station I've never been to!

Sorry - it isn't, not to say that there isn't a similar sign there!

That's what I noticed ... it seemed that time travel had reached Gloucestershire, and I wondered if it related to the trains being in a different order when they passed through Standish Junction.

At 9:16, neither train had reached Standish - but both were past Westerleigh, and of course running in reverse order as only the GW service is going to rub noses with Gloucester.

But surely the CIS doesn't just react dumbly to that earlier section of same-track running? I imagine that the times predicted are based on timetable plus notified delay upstream, which allows for different travel times. For trains that share a platform the CIS needs to know something about what signalling is going to do when they merge (or could overtake). In the absence of route-setting that comes down to what the signaller is minded to do, so maybe it needs some kind of feed in from the signalling/ers.

Where trains are delayed, and in effect jockeying for position, you do see the CIS flip between orders (and I remember seeing that at Amersfoort too). I think the switching must be slugged, to prevent the display changing too fast. So perhaps this one was reacting to a misleading input in the past?

2.  Swindon?

Yes, it is.

With the Filton area closed for a weekend, CrossCountry services were diverted via Swindon - that's the "Edinburgh" train on the display.     I was headed north and caught that train, which provided a superb demonstration of the sort of thing that's possible from this huge town (near-City) to The Midlands and North. Normally, its a slow old slog ...

Worse in Bridgwater. The pigeons fly upside down there. It isn't worth s******g on.

Sorry - already identified by John R as Swindon but I hadn't got back to editing the original post to put that answer in!

Correct!   The Friends of Huddersfield Station had a magnificent welcome point to the town ... looking at our talk elsewhere over the last day or two, Truro and Swindon might look to them as an example.

I'm surprised that one didn't go early ... and it's now the only one left.

As there's no picture from that town in this set

Astounded this one's still not even had a nibble, as it's pointing towards a station that's most definitely GWR.  Photo's my own, and I've been past it four times in the last 18 months; picture taken on my most recent visit last month.

OK I'll give it a shot.  Only place I've seen stonework like that is St.Austell.

You're warm ... but not St. Austell.  "In the correct stonework area" I would suspect, though I can't be sure as I haven't been that far west for years!

Saltash has its fair share of crumbling stonework, too.  ;) :D ;D
