Title: Cardiff to Ebbw Vale service
Post by: Jez on February 16, 2008, 18:04:00
I see they are using 4 carriages on this service. 2 x 150s.  It also needs 4 by the looks of it as I saw the 15.35 depart today and it was packed full of passengers.

It also appears that Cardiff Central are using Platform 0 for the first time on Saturdays for this service.  Usually this platform was only used for the Cardiff---Nottingham service during the week. Does anyone know if the Cardiff-Nottingham service is still using Platform 0 during the week or is it going from Platform 1/2 like on Saturdays?

Platform 0 was in use for the Ebbw Vale service at around 17:30 last Tuesday ... don't know if that answers the question though.  On that day, the 4 car 150 was not heavily loaded.  Do you think the busyness on a Saturday is an initial splurge of people tryingout the new service and will settle back, or will it remain that busy?

Not sure to be honest. I guess people are using it now as its been on the local news, newspapers during the week so they are aware of it.  I noticed there were already people starting to wait for the next train about 10 mins after the last 1 had gone. Also several people didnt know how to get to Platform 0 as its a different enterance entirely from the other platforms at Cardiff.

They always used Platform 0 during the week for the Nottingham service due to so many trains departing from Platforms 1 and 2 so it was kind of a spare platform. On Saturdays it wasnt needed as there isnt a train to Paddington and 5 minutes to the hour.

To be fair, plat 0 isnt really "used" that heavily.

And yes the cardiff to notts train still goes from 0

What other Stations have a Platform Zero?

I know of one British Station that has Platforms A, B, C, and D

I think Kings Cross is about to get one.

It isnt, and wasnt used on a Saturday at all until yesterday as far as I know.

So is it just the Ebbw Vale and Cardiff to Notts services using it during the week? As I said Cardiff to Notts use Platform 2 on Saturdays.

Waterloo East has ABCD.

Correct Waterlo East has platforms A,B,C & D. Something to do with Preventing confusion against the Waterloo Main Line terminus platforms 1-4.

Knew there were a few Platform ZERO around, knew of the Zero at Cardiff, didn't know where the others were.

Yep - exactly right, prevents confusion with Waterloo 1-4, they weren't numbered following on from 19 as it allows for expansion of Waterloo station further (ie, 1-19 mainline, 20-24 Eurostar, 25-26 Waterloo & City (ex-BR)).

I think the reason they called it platform 0 at Cardiff was due to where the platform is in the station. There is no platform 5 but it would have been odd to call the new platform that as it would be in the wrong order relating to where the platform is.

I am going on the Ebbw Vale service next Tuesday so will go on Platform 0 for the first time  ;)

Well the Cardiff-Nottingham service appears not to be running today (instead replacement buses not from Cardiff but Newport) so I wonder if they will use Platform 0 for the Ebbw Vale service today seeing as there will be less trains on platform 1 and 2.

It's a rugby day today, so they'll probably be going from 1/2

I think thats why they have an extra service running between Cardiff and Newport at about 17.05.

Used this service today - it was a 2 carriage 150 in both directions so they are no longer operating 4 carriages then? Mind you, we almost had an entire carriage to ourselves on the return journey so a 4 carriage train is definately not required.  Quite a lot of people on the 15.35 from Cardiff Central though.

It was. We caught the 14.40 back from Ebbw Vale.

We got a bus from outside Ebbw Vale Parkway into the town centre, however the driver of the bus said next time to ask the conductor on the train to get a ticket straight through to avoid having to pay on the bus as well - it was only like a ^1 return so I wasnt bothered.

It was a Wise move to start a Service with 4 cars, the ever Rail hunting Press would have as much meat (proberley more) about overcrowded trains on the Ebbw Vale service than the New passenger service it's self.

When the departure screens worked, Charlbury's platform was labelled platform 0.

Still get the occasional visitor buying tickets asking which platform the London train departs from...usually answered by 'any platform you like!'

Ebbw Vale service was departing to Platform 4 today - normally a platform only used for services terminating or going West towards Bridgend and beyond. Perhaps it was to avoid using Platform 0 again at weekends (Notts service went from Platform 1) or maybe they just used a terminating train.

What time did you use it? As on peak services it doesnt do plat 0 due to the amount of people who wait for the Notts train

It was the 16.35, I didnt use it but saw it depart.  Notts was going from Plat 1 yesterday as it doesnt do Platform 0 on weekends.

Middle of the afternoon Good Friday, and the Cardiff-Ebbw Vale 150/2 was so full that I only just managed to squeeze on... and this is before the final two stations of phase 1 have opened.

Good to hear that the new service is so well used. It just goes to show that if you run a train between places people want to travel at a time they want to travel it will be used.

It's a pity that having started the service there is not enough stock that people have to stand and also the infrastructure track signalling etc. is so sparce that it will be impossible to increase train frequencies.

Why do we always, mixing metaphors, spoil the ship for a hap'th of tar. Signalling and track put in at the start and stock ordered before hand is always going to be cheaper in the long run even if it marginally increases capital costs.

I blame the accountants.

Two. The conductor apologised for the overcrowding as the train arrived at EBV.

Knew there were a few Platform ZERO around, knew of the Zero at Cardiff, didn't know where the others were.

LEEDS is about to join them ... from the Yorkshire Post (https://www.yorkshirepost.co.uk/news/transport/new-picture-shows-leeds-station-platform-zero-hundreds-workers-give-christmas-finish-ps161m-job-3079037)

Quote
New picture shows Leeds Station platform zero as hundreds of workers give up Christmas to finish GBP161m job

Hundreds of workers have given up their Christmases with their families to complete a major GBP161million investment to build a new platform at Leeds station.

[snip]

Over the final two-and-a-half days of work, final work to the overhead lines, track and signalling systems will take place, as well as rigorous testing to make sure the platform is ready for train services.

While the platform won't come into full use until the May 2021 timetable change, it will be available for trains to use during times of disruption, helping to minimise delays for passengers.

Next ... Chippenham?   Platform face there already ... "just" need the track!

Noting ... visited the platforms, and didn't travel on a train from or to each of them ... I don't think many trains use the one at Haymarket?
