Title: 'Flying Scotsman from the footplate' - BBC4, 29 Dec 2016
Post by: TonyK on December 19, 2016, 23:33:07
When the rest of the family have finished watching highlights of Strictly Come Baking and the like, and it is safe fore me to come back into the room, I shall adjust the dial to BBC4 on Thursday 29 December at 9.00pm. Why?

Flying Scotsman from the Footplate!

This programme offers a 60-minute driver's eye view of a trip along the Severn Valley Railway, from Bridgnorth to Kidderminster. Cameras mounted in the cab catch the action there, as well as outside. It sounds an absolute gem of a telly program.

A Christmas cracker of a programme. The sounds and pictures were words enough. Just a minimal amount of voice over from the footplate crew themselves.

It appeared to be filmed almost entirely with Go-Pro type cameras and drones. Showing just how good these technologies now are.

I can't wait to get my 4K camera drone into the air alongside (adhering to the law on distance from vehicles and buildings) railways and film some trains.

Mention was made of max. linespeed of 25mph, but looked like it was doing a bit more than that at times!

Cracking programme.  Wonderful to have no music, with just a running commentary from the crew, fed with live audio.

I've watched a bit of it, and think it is brilliant. I shall wait for my family to sod off home again before pouring the port and enjoying it alone.

Ooh - wouldn't it be nice if they can do a similar programme when Tornado is allowed to run at 90mph, out where big engines belong, on the main line, specifically the ECML..

Not really. The original broadcast on the 29th December had some voice-over from the footplate crew. The second showing tonight, 1st January 2017, didn't.

Both available via iPlayer

Voice-over: http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b086kn87

No voice-over: http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b087k5rf
