Title: Great Orme Tramway (split from "People tired of old and cramped Arriva trains, say MPs"

Wales - with the only operational electric railway so far being the cliff lift at Aberystwyth (? do I have that right ?)

Great Orme Tramway uses electricity too. Albeit to power the cable winding motors.

Great Orme Tramway is a personal favourite of mine as it has everything - vintage cars, street sections, open sections at the top with magnificent views, impressive engineering and gradients and a pub by the station at the bottom!  If you're anywhere near Llandudno I'd strongly recommend a trip on it!

I concur.

And I'd say the best way to experience the Great Orme is to take the Tramway up and then walk down. That way you can photograph the Tramway in operation as you walk down.

(Topic split Mods? If so I'll dig up my Great Orme photos and post them.)

We're very fond of it too, for all those very good reasons but with added family connections on my Mum's side (up until the mid 1950s). We sometimes go back and imagine her still there.

It does, though, have old and cramped carriages that the Welsh MPs want to be replaced.

Oh - wait - the thread has been split  ;)

Did you have a pint at the pub by Victoria station?  I also enjoyed a lovely chilli cheese and chorizo ciabatta there as well.  A pub called The Snowdon just down the road was also a nice place to sit in the sunshine.  Thanks for sharing the pictures.

I had a pint at the top.

I took the tram up late afternoon when they were only selling singles to the top because there was no guarantee of space coming down. I then looked at the option of the bus back down, but in the end I decided to walk it, photographing as I went. Very nice walk it was too. An alternative would have been the cable car but it was not running on the day of my visit due to high wind.

Once back at the bottom I repaired to the Wetherspoons in Llandudno.

Noting the trolleys on top of the cars, but not seeing (m)any support poles.   Guessing that communication is using that new fangled radio thing to the drivers and that it was a communication system?

Yes, the trolleys were used for a telegraph communication system. Now replaced by an induction loop radio system.
