Title: Where was bignosemac today, 13th February 2017
Post by: JayMac on February 13, 2017, 23:43:52
Another day out learning to drive and taking in former railway locations. Two different places to guess this time:

A.

A) Ashcott or Shapwick on the Evercreech to Highbridge line?

Nope, sorry. Although not a bad (close-ish) guess for B...

I do believe B is Bason Bridge station - of which something is evidently still there.

Correct. Here's a view looking the other way. I'm standing on what would have been the track bed. A very cramped site it must have been. A station, a level crossing, the River Brue immediately parallel, the B3139 road and its bridge across the river:

As picture A hasn't been guessed yet, here's another clue as to the location:

Ah, you're off my patch there.  If it was North Somerset I'd probably get it, but I have very limited knowledge of the old railways in Real Somerset.  :-\

Belay that.  I now believe A to be Montacute - or, rather, the site of the long-gone railway station there.

I would agree that it is Montacute, with the station up the track from the photographer. The track bed now forms the link road from Yeovil, near Westlands, to the A303 at the Cartgate roundabout.
I was on the last train from Taunton to Yeovil many years ago.

Having posted here that I had very limited knowledge of the old railways in Somerset, I then remembered that I do have a copy of Mike Oakley's excellent 'Somerset Stations, Then ... and Now'  (ISBN 978 1 904 34994 5)

Trawling through that, I found on page 61 (ironically, just overleaf is 'Nailsea & Backwell'!) a picture showing the old trackbed on the site of Montacute Station.  It's now the A3088.  ::)

Correct. A is Montacute. The station was at the end of the lane seen heading ahead in the first image. I walked to the bottom of that lane to a wicket gate that takes you to the A3088 (http://www.sabre-roads.org.uk/wiki/index.php?title=A3088). Very overgrown here making it difficult to get a clear picture of Station House on the other side of the road. Too risky to go further to the edge of the carriageway. Although I presume the reason there's a wicket gate and route through the undergrowth is that this is a public footpath. You'd take your life in your hands crossing the A3088 though.

One final picture from the area. A little to the south east of Montacute station is a period railway overbridge (period but presumably widened to take the road) crossing the minor road from Montacute to Tintinhull. That's 'Noah', my Fiesta parked under the bridge:

My car is black, and the registration includes CWL.  I therefore take the cowl to work, etc.  ;) :D ;D

That's a beautiful bridge and the two distinct 'eras' make it all the more interesting.
