Title: Old Oak Common Open Day - Saturday 2nd September 2017
Post by: JayMac on March 17, 2017, 04:25:24
GWR will be opening their Old Oak Common depot, London, to the public on Saturday 2nd September 2017. This year marks the depot's 111th birthday and this event will likely be the last opportunity for the public to visit the site. OOC is due to close and be demolished in 2018.

There are no public details on tickets and times as i type (17th March 2017) but a brief has gone out to GWR staff:

Quote
Old Oak Common depot Open Day – save the date

Old Oak Common is marking its 111th birthday this year, and will be holding an Open Day on Saturday 2 September. The day will be themed OOC111 – Legends of the Great Western, and will be a celebration of the locomotives Old Oak Common has maintained over the years. The event follows the success of the St Philips Marsh Open Day last year, which raised more than £20,000 for charity."

I worked there 1978 - 80.  The HST Shed was still quite new, and the older bits - the Factory, Inspection Shed and turntable, Coronation Shed, Carriage Shed, etc - were still open and busy.  I think from past comments that there are a few other Forum members who worked there also.  Must try and go along.

GWR press release:

Quote
LEGENDS OF THE GREAT WESTERN

17th March 2017

Iconic London depot to be revealed to members of the public in celebration of 111 years of engineering excellence

Exactly 111 years since opening on 17 March 1906, GWR has today announced Old Oak Common (OOC) depot will be opened to members of the public.

Celebrating its contribution in maintaining the Legends of the Great Western, the depot will hold an open day on Saturday 2 September; OOC111.

On display will be a unique collection of trains and locomotives, both old and new, which make the Great Western ‘God’s Wonderful Railway’. Full line up to be announced soon.

During its 111-year history, the depot and its dedicated, highly skilled staff have maintained everything from the Kings and Castles of the steam era, to the diesel-powered Westerns and Warships.

In 1976 the depot was the maintenance hub in the Western region for the newly introduced High Speeds Trains, the iconic trains which changed the face of Intercity travel in the UK.

While the HST fleet still operates today it is soon to be replaced after over 40 years of service by the new Hitachi Intercity Express Train, which will provide another step change in passenger experience when they begin passenger services later this year.

Tickets will go on sale shortly and demand is expected to be high for this unique event.

All profits will go to the depot’s chosen charity Place2Be, which provides mental health support for children in schools and whose patron is HRH The Duchess of Cambridge.

In May 2016 GWR’s St Philips Marsh depot raised over £20,000 for charity with a celebration of 40 years of the High Speed Train.

I was an OOC allocated apprentice 1975 - 79 did part of my time at the Oak Sept 76, I first went into the HST shed around in early 77 was all shiny and new; think it was one or two A exams a week on the production HST that were being used for driver training etc and the prototype which had a C exam  :o  ;D plus did all the usual haunts Factory, C & W ODM

I ended my time at Padd ODM ...................

OOC as a GWR depot may be closing but OCC will still live on past its 111th birthday with the Crossrail errrrrrrrrrrrrr Elizabeth Line Depot and not forgetting just to the South is Hitachi North Pole Depot

Welcome to the forum.  There is a placeholder website at http://oocopenday.com/, but no opportunity to purchase tickets yet.

I am sure there will be a contignent of Coffee Shop members attending.  I plan on going, but will have to double check my diary nearer the time (it potentially clashes with travel to a conference).

I have the standard ticket.

All VIP tickets sold out.

I will be travelling from Cardiff Central.

I remember travelling on HST 253 007 on a test run, invited by Harry Mathieson, Traction Inspector. 1976.

OOC to Pad, Pad to Swindon & return, if I remember correctly it managed 134 mph, then an emergency brake appication test, didn't even spill my coffee.

I miss all the people I worked with at OOC.

A great bunch of people, including Zedabee (not sure how you spell that...................

Zebadee son still at Reading.   It was sad that last year Dutchie passed away.

I will miss the Oak when she closes the once grand Depot of the GWR, she had her heart ripped out when the round house went (never saw it) had her muscle's torn when the Factory went but she limbered on.  All is not doom and gloom the new Elizabeth Line depot is on the site and North Pole is just across the line, so in essences the Old Oak live on

Tickets booked for a first-and-last visit. The line-up is impressive, with a King, a Hall, 1501, Steam Railmotor & autocoach, Oliver Cromwell and Tornado already announced. The hydraulics are well represented by D1015, D821 D7017 and a "Teddy Bear", (plus the engine of a D63xx). In addition, there'll be a couple of gronks, half a dozen 50s and a 47, the hst prototype, a few 57s and 66779 "Evening Star" alongside various hst power cars and units.

There are still half a dozen locos to be announced, as well. It should be a good day out.

I see both 43002 and 43185 are booked to attend the open day; no point going out for my normal summer Saturday Pembroke Coast Express photography session in the hope of seeing them (I saw 'Harry Patch' on a Pembroke working for the first time this past weekend, but still not had either of the heritage power cars visit).

Then again, I see all four sleeper class 57s are booked to attend, so maybe the list is a "we'll have a least one of these present" affair. If all the sleeper locos are to be there, how does that work when one must be in Penzance? Are they going to run one ECS to Old Oak and back to attend the event briefly about lunch time before sending it back to Penzance?

43002/185 are currently running together in the same formation.  If you don't have access to any of the industry systems then the data section of railcam.org (annual membership subscription of £15) often has their daily allocations added by members.  Many freight locos and even some units can also be followed on there, so it's becoming a very useful resource for enthusiasts.

Would that photo have been taken at about 16:25? If so, that wasn't the Pembroke Coast Express (which is the 08:45 from Paddington to Pembroke Dock and 10:01 Pembroke Dock to London Paddington). The difference (apart from window labels and, on GWR stations, annoucments) is that the Pembroke Coast Express is (I believe) the only public service on the Pembroke Dock branch that is not booked to call at stations such as Narberth. The afternoon service from Pembroke Dock to Paddington is not the Pembroke Coast Express and so will call at all of the stations on the branch (if requested).

As a stranger to this area.  Which tube station/main line station is within easy walking distance of the depot, please? Probably staying in London and taking the tube (or main line if closer to OOC).  I note all the tour tickets have gone but if tickets still available for the depot then that would suffice. Just been given official blessing to attend.  Hopefully Mrs GBM will be shopping in the city.

On the OOC111 website they recommend East Acton on the Central Line (10-11 minutes walk) or Willesden Junction (Bakerloo and Overground from Euston) 12-13 minutes walk.  There is a bus (228) every 12 minutes from Willesden Junction to OOC. So from Paddington, I'll be using the Bakerloo (6 stops).

Check out their website (http://oocopenday.com/getting%20here-2.html) for maps etc.

PS bring a contactless credit/debit card for the tube & bus. Don't bother with Oyster.  Touch in only on the bus; touch in and out on the underground.

It's not particularly handily located that's for sure.  I wouldn't recommend Acton Main Line as although it looks close by train, on foot you have to dogleg to get over major roads so getting on for a 30 minute walk.

I'm driving to Twyford and parking. Then train to Ealing Broadway. Onto Central Line to East Acton. Then either walk or TfL bus 228, depending how I feel.

When I used to commute to OOC in the late 70's I used to get the Central Line from Ealing Broadway to North Acton, which was closer than East Acton.  However, this relied on a path that cut through to Old Oak Common Lane:  I've no idea if this path still exists as there's been a fair bit of development around there.

I'll probably travel to Padd then Bakerloo line to Willesden J.

According to various map sources I've looked at, East Acton is marginally closer to OOC entrance. By about 0.05 miles. Plus it's very near the TfL 228 bus route, should I be feeling lazy.

Of course, there may be unmapped footpaths that shorten the route from North Acton.

I'll be going too, dragging the family along  ;)

Our method is drive to Westfield then one stop on the tube.

I remember last time I went (15 years ago?) they ran a turbo shuttle from Paddington, however I still went via pad then east Acton for some reason.
Time before that (25+ years ago) it was suppose to be a shuttle with a class 117? from the end of platform 1 at pad, however that failed before departure and we were transferred to an HST that was due to go to old oak anyway.

Would that be the footpath that ran alongside and south of the old (closed 1947) Old Oak Lane Halt? There is still a footbridge over the Central Line, and an entrance off Old Oak Lane though that's now gated. Where, how, or even if it went under the West London Line isn't clear on the maps I've seen. Ah - it did go under the WLL, and along the top of the deep cutting (with steps for the steep bit) and came out onto Victoria Road  opposite the old Station Cafe. See OS map TQ2181NW, Surveyed: 1953, Published: 1955 for details (lots of them; that's mapped at 1:1250).

I think that was the path, which is in fact marked on my Big London A-Z dated 2007.  Perhaps it is/was a railway-owned path and not a public footpath, and maybe it's not now open to the public.  I might have a look on Saturday, and might even go back via North Acton for old time's sake.

However, I normally went home on the drivers' "workabus" to Padd - there are some stories to be told about some of those journies journeys!

Edit - inexcusable spelling error!

Yes, that's the one (I'd forgotten I've got an old A-Z; in my case from 1990). I think it was closed because a thing was built next to it at the Old Oak Lane end. What kind of thing? Kensal Green ATFS!

The path from North Acton to Old Oak Lane closed 25 years ago!!!!!

The best route if using TV locals is Ealing Broadway to East Acton on the Central  and hoof it or if using intercity Padd to Willesden Jcn on the Bakerloo and hoof it

I've decided to drive to Westfield Shepherds Bush too. With parking there only £6 it's a no-brainer. The 228 bus also calls at Westfield.

Congratulations to everyone involved in putting on to-days event, which I thoroughly enjoyed.  First time I’ve been back to OOC in 37 years, but nice to see parts of the carriage shed just like they were in my time.  Also the café on the corner of Old Oak Common Lane is still there where the HST commissioning team would have their special fry up – an “Alfie”.  Met a few people who were there in my era, and it brought back many memories.

Well planned opening ceremony as well, with a specially-vinyled vehicles - first a 180, then a HST power car - rolling out of the heavy maintenance shed on their cues.

Well done GWR (and I don’t often think that)!

If only running a railway was as easy ...

I spent about an hour at the depot, had another event to go to in the afternoon.

I did get a chance to meet a few ex colleges; some still at the depot but with literally weeks left before they take redundancy / retirement.

A well thought out event, excellent planning and management a real credit to the Old Oak team, they paid the 'ld girl a fitting tribute one that will be remembered for a long time.  All this in the phoenix just over the fence the Elizabeth Line Depot who continues to bare the proud name Old Oak Common

A grand (half) day out. In the company of PhilWakely. Plenty of 'Western' variety on display, from GWR (original) King through to GWR (imposter) Class 800. Via diesel-hydraulics, 47s, 50s, HSTs and 180s.

Two-fifths of a 180 was unveiled in a commerative vinyl wrap, celebrating 111 years of Old Oak Common and 'Legends of the Great Western', as well as highlighting the charity chosen as beneficiary for this event.

https://www.place2be.org.uk A children's mental health charity.

Also unveiled in a commerative livery was HST power car 43093. Which has been named 'Old Oak Common HST Depot 1976-2018'.

Despite not taking my camera I do have a half decent set of photos taken on phone. I'm uploading those to my Google Drive as I type. I'll post a link to the folder later.

Does anybody know why the prototype HST power car 41001 was in the shed and not outside (I didn't actually venture far into the shed to investigate due to the number of people)?

To quote the 125 group "Nothing to worry about. It's just getting a wheel bearing done."

Taking advantage of the facilities on offer, no doubt.  ;D

It was part of the deal to get it to the event. It needed a bogie removal due to a hot wheel bearing. OOC had a suitable bogie drop and in the photo below, you can see its front bogie in the centre with the enormously extended springs. A classic case of win-win for all parties.

The 57 bogie to the right was from under the lifted body of my third photograph above from yesterday.

Saw the Hymek pictured on the back of a low-loader, on the M4 (eastbound) near Reading last week, so now know where it was going.

Thanks to all involved for a fantastic day from start to finish. Any WR diesel fan couldn't have wished for a better line-up and the steamies provided the icing on the cake. The weather was perfect and the staff absolutely great. I hope GWR appreciate the dedication and enthusiasm of their personnel.

I followed up the day with a Sunday visit to Didcot, to complete the GWR weekend binge. Marvellous!

GWR open day scoops prestigious industry award and raises over £50,000 for charity

Monday 29th January 2018
GWR’s Legends of the Great Western open day at Old Oak Common depot has today scooped a prestigious silver Golden Whistle award for Outstanding Team.

Over 7,000 attended the open day held in September 2017, helping to raise over £50,000 for children’s charity Place2Be, and today [Friday 26 January] earning silver in the Institute of Railway Operators Golden Whistle awards in the Outstanding Team category. The gold award was won by South Western Railway for the Waterloo Upgrade Team.

GWR Managing Director Mark Hopwood said:

“The depot at Old Oak has been a central feature of the Great Western network for generations, helping to maintain a host of different train fleets throughout its long history.

“It is fitting that we pay a tribute to the people who work there, and the contribution they have made, and I am delighted to see them recognised in this way winning this silver award.”

The Golden Whistle Awards are dedicated to people who work in or interface with railway operations, recognising those who have gone above and beyond expectations to deliver excellence in railway operations.

The open day saw a unique collection of trains and locomotives, both old and new with a centrepiece line-up of traction spanning all 111 years of the depot and made the Great Western ‘God’s Wonderful Railway’.

Don't worry about either of you not having seen it much - it's probably 'been kept indoors' for a while, due to 'more trains than usual needing repairs at the same time'.
