Title: How many locations that I have visited can you identify?
Post by: grahame on April 28, 2017, 14:59:56
Time was when you couldn't travel by train from Melksham ... picture from the 1970s

But now you can reach thousands of destination in the British Isles and beyond ... and in recent years I have personally made many journeys.

I've put a new quiz online at http://www.wellho.net/network/ which invites you to identify some of the places I've been ... each time you take the quiz you'll be offered a different 15 places from my library of over 170 pictures, taken at over 150 different locations.

Please try the quiz - multiple times if you like

Please post up scores and comments ... I will be going outside the forum to publicise it wider in a few days and would like to know of spelling mistakes, how hard it is, etc ahead of time.   And judging by comments on a previous "know your Melksham" quiz using the same software , one or two of you may get hooked!

8/15 for my first attempt, I'll have another go later  :)

13/15 for my first attempt, although a few were educated guesses having discounted a couple of answers. Very surprised at the two incorrect answers though as I should have got them  ::)

It's a fairly tough one ... 13 is pretty good (and 8 isn't be be sneezed at either).    I suspect if the quiz was put together by someone else, I would have only got 6 or 7.  If it goes well / is popular, I might do another one at a later date inviting someone else to provide the data!

12 out of 15.  To my disgrace I failed to get Dilton Marsh and Corsham :-[

A perfect 15/15 at my first attempt!

Screen grab attached as proof.

That is darned good going ... it's not an easy quiz.  The randomness of the questions means that you can have another go too ... I know you would do well again ...

I had another go, 13/15 this time, but 3 of those were repeats from my first go, of which I got 1 wrong first time around.

It's random ... so you will get a few repeats. As you try more and more, you'll see more repeats - initially 2 or 3 for the first few goes.   I am not logging who gets what by cookie or anything like that (not using cookies!) so can't eliminate duplicates.

13 out of 15 counts as "very good"  ;D

Slipping. 14/15 at the second attempt.

So what caught you?  There are some real tough ones in there.

Taunton was  too easy when the other 3 multiple choices were Doncaster, Grimsby and Barnsley and a GWR HST is sat waiting,

I'm going to review later before I do another quiz ... but there was certainly a deliberate attempt to have some easy, some difficult and some fiendish!

One of the TfL locations. The slightly blurry one with the S Stock train. Sufficiently blurry to not be able to discern the name on the roundel in the background.

Blimey. 13/15. Which is surprising as at least 9 of those 15 were guesswork!

14/15 first time for me.  I should have known the one I got wrong and made a few 'deductions' about some.  I shall enjoy having another go.  Thanks Graham.

 ;D

This ain't one of these quizzes that say they're hard but turn out to be easy.  A score of 13 is pretty darned good ...  and I'll bet the guesses were educated guesses ...

11/15 at first attempt, pleased with that as quite a few were guesswork and/or done by process of elimination (eg, I know that's not St Ives, it's a single line terminus, probably Newquay....correct!)

I know I would have trouble reaching double figures if someone else had set the quiz - though the multiple choice approach makes it a tad easier.  I'm amazed how many people are scoring so well!

Correction made to picture location http://www.wellho.net/pix/pdestd4.jpg ... not bad to have only had one error reported.

Quiz remains open at http://www.wellho.net/network ... Go on - have another go - you'll get different pictures!

I've had four goes now and been as low as 11 but can't get higher than 14 (twice).  But how can one guess a piece of plain track with few features surrounding?   ;D  Good fun and certainly makes the brain work.

The very fact that there are few features  ;D ... helps eliminate the other three (assuming I have the picture you're talking about) ... but one of the most difficult in the quiz.    Very very people have scored a perfect 15 ...

There have now been 696 submissions for marking for this quiz ... the picture that the least people have got right is this one - only 61.9%;

second hardest at 63.5%:

Easiest (86.9%):

and second easiet (85.7%):

(Can't imagine why so many people got those!)

Of course the whole story is only told when you know what the options offered were; in some cases I offered some pretty silly options and other were darned hard!

Quiz still open at http://www.wellho.net/network

Have I found another error..........

I am probably being very thick here, but I am pretty certain this is NOT honiton as you suggest (Honiton's old station building was demolished many moons ago). It actually looks more like Crewkerne to me, but that isn't offered as an answer. ?????

Oh sugary-dee ... I'll need to dig out the original and see what the GPS marking tells me!

Crewkerne seems right, the roof of the signal box can be seen at the top, far right. The stonework is correct as is the exit to the right of the building

On my second attempt, I have just scored 10 out of 15 - and one of those was a Taunton, which I got right!  :o

I also got right the apparently most difficult one (see grahame's post above), which made me feel rather smug.  ;D

Those two "hardest" are IMO the easiest!

Those two "hardest" are IMO the easiest!

I've often noticed in our quizzes that pictures taken event slightly away from National Rail / Network Rail land are the last ones to be guessed.  So this result was no surprise to me ... helped me sanity check my algorithm.  And at the other end, I can see why those (other) two were the easiest.

11 out of 15 last night.  Some guesses partly inspired by my knowledge of Graham's travels.

I had to do the quiz 11 times to get that yellow tram to appear...  >:(

I reckon my average score was eventually about 14...  ;D

OK ... It's Crewkerne ... looks like the GPS on my phone was a bit off as it's labelled successive similar pictures as Honiton and Crewkerne ... and some other (bare platform ones) also as Honiton.   Data corrected - anyone still playing who's offered this now has the advantage of the right option ...

11/15 and yes, it might get a bit addictive.

It is indeed becoming addictive - but on my third attempt, I've dipped slightly to 9 / 15.  ::)

However - I rather think 'Burngunlow' is not a valid option, on a Maiden Newton one (which I actually got correct).  ;)

Perfectly OK to offer Burngunlow as an incorrect option, I think ... I have, however, changed the data to Burngullow as that's a real place  ;D
