Anyone know whether these stations are connected, or whether one needs to walk on the street between the two?

I have a tight connection in the coming days- but planner websites definitely give it, so I'm guessing the stations are connected somehow. However google maps thinks they're separate....

They are so connected they are one and the same place.

It is Zuid (South) in Flemish and Midi (South) in French

Watch out for pickpockets used to be notorious for them.

Yup, my passport went 'missing' on a day trip, ended up spending an extra 24 hours in Brussels, thankfully we had the flexibility with travelling on Eurostar tickets.

As ellendune points out they are the same place. I presume that you are arriving by Eurostar but where are you connecting to? If you are connecting to the Thalys or DB ICE there are exits part way down the Eurostar platforms (look for "Correspondances") which take you directly to these trains.

If you have an internal connection on SNCB within Belgium, then take the exit at the front of the train, go out through the gates and down the stairs. This will bring you out to the main passageway under the station which gives you access to all the platforms.

As the previous poster says, look out for pickpockets!

CAUTION: these exits are not always available so be prepared to make a dash if time is tight as I have had to more than once. I concur with all the personal security warnings - especially when 'dashing'!

I've deliberately refused the suggested short connection time & chosen a later connection. Easy to do on a 'Any Belgian Station' ticket. Heading for Ieper/Ypres via Ghent. Got £29 singles both ways, bargain.

A bargain it is, when Eurostar charge 30 Euros one-way reservation for pass holders (such as Interrail)... that is if they can get their website to work.
