Title: British Transport Police - Conservative Manifesto Proposals
Post by: ellendune on May 29, 2017, 16:11:48
Page 44 of the Conservative manifesto https://s3.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com/manifesto2017/Manifesto2017.pdf (https://s3.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com/manifesto2017/Manifesto2017.pdf) says:

Quote
We will create a national infrastructure police force, bringing together the Civil Nuclear Constabulary, The Ministry of Defence Police and the British Transport Police to improve the protection of critical infrastructure....

Now I know that the MoD police is not the Military Police, but where is the logic in this change - unless it is to try and cover up the 50% cut in the MoD policer budget.

Would save back office costs for sure. Duties too different to easily combine duties for more flexible workforce, I'd have thought

Its all about saving money and nothing to do with improving Policing

You can bet that where there are areas currently covered by more than one of these non territorial police forces, it won't just be back office functions being cut. There will be cuts to attested constables too.

In the current security emergency, they won't be allowed to get away with that...

These three clearly work together already. BTP called on help from the CNC, and MoD police forces for the armed officers on trains and stations through the past few days.

There has been a substantial or severe threat from international terrorism in the UK since 2010. That didn't stop Theresa May as Home Secretary making cuts in front line policing numbers. I see no commitment from her to increase police numbers. Nor do I see a commitment that numbers in the non territorial police forces will be maintained after a merger.

More police means higher taxes. Unless Diane Abbot is doing the maths.

I think I heard that she is increasing numbers in her nanufesto, but crrtainly not as far as Corbyn. Threat far higher now than in 2010, she would lise votes big time with more cuts

Accuracy can certainly be an issue on political debate.   ::)

Heard? No need for hearsay, just read it. Link earlier in the thread. No commitment in it to increase front line police numbers.

Threat far higher now than in 2010.

Nope. As of today it's at the same level. Unless you are referring to just the first 21 days of January 2010.

Indeed, but if you ask Joe Public anytime now, you'll find that they perceive the threat to be higher, what with MCR last week.....

Remember this is the PM who when the Home Secretary implemented the Windsor Report into UK Policing ............. numbers of Police Officers, Police Stations, Forensic Science, have all reduced and there is "collaboration" across Police borders for things like Dog Units, SOCO, Armed response ............. etc

There is a Bill being discussed in the Scottish Parliament to merge BTP north of the border with Police Scotland.

Interestingly the Scottish Conservatives have opposed the move.

Meanwhile, my local police station here in Nailsea (52JN) has now closed down.  Our local MP is Dr Liam Fox (Conservative).

Just sayin'.  ::)

Well, Mrs CfN and I did, over a road traffic matter - and there were two other 'customers' in the foyer there then.

But it's not just the front desk that's gone - it's the whole operational complex: locally based response cars, task force van, CID, scientific investigations - all now rebased, many miles away.  :-\

I don't mind what name the police have on their helmets under the Crown, as long as there are enough of them.

I would however rather see the oafish and excessive new electrification clearances cut back to BR's standards which were based on sound science and experience.

As we can't spend our money twice we shall just have to remember how much safer it is to be mugged 3.6m away from the juice rather than 2.7m.
