Title: Bristol, coolest city in the world
Post by: Bmblbzzz on December 05, 2017, 15:07:36
Well, eleventh coolest place in the world, actually, according to National Geographic Traveller. But surely being labelled "cool" by the National Geographic is like being called "rebellious" or "subversive" on a Top of the Pops appearance?

BRISTOL NAMED ONE OF THE COOLEST CITIES IN THE WORLD BY NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC
By MARTIN BOOTH, Tuesday Dec 5, 2017
“Is there a British city with a more indie spirit?” asks National Geographic Traveller when naming Bristol 11th on their Cool List 2018, rounding up “the coolest haunts, the hippest hangouts, the bucket list breaks and the enthralling escapes… the 18 destinations set to make it big in 2018”.
Bristol joins the likes of Sri Lanka, Tblisi and Buenos Aires on the list, and even pips Paris by one place.

The city’s flourishing food and drink scene has contributed strongly to this latest accolade, with seven new entries in this year’s The Good Food Guide.
“From its lauded restaurants serving up local flavours to the break-beat heartbeat of its rudely healthy music scene, Bristol is an offbeat city ever on the rise,” writes National Geographic Traveller.
“Its dockside regeneration — still artfully ongoing after 20 years — is currently one of Europe’s largest redevelopment projects.

“Yes, it’s still home to pretty Georgian terraces, the iconic Clifton Suspension Bridge and Brunel’s SS Great Britain. But this is a city that’s gone from colonial-era industrial savvy to leftfield creativity.
“And nowhere is this more apparent than in its food scene. Bristol is being touted as the best place to eat outside London, with seven new entries in this year’s The Good Food Guide.”
Those new entries by the way are Box-E in Cargo 1, The Cauldron in St Werburgh’s, Hart’s Bakery at Temple Meads, Paco Tapas at The General, Pasta Loco on Cotham Hill, Pi Shop at The General and Tare at Cargo 2.

Hm. I've been to four of the places (including Bristol) on that list this year, and Bristol doesn't figure in the first three places for memorable meals.

How does Bristol end up in a list with Russia?

I'll concur with that FT, N!

Out of BA, Namibia, Greece, Singapore, Flanders, Paris, Perth and Russia - Bristol hasn't struck a particular culinary note.  Must have eaten at the wrong place.  The others had some memorable food moments - and a lot less weird than some other places I have been.

Agreed - I went to one of those ranches outside BA in February, where the barbecue would attract the fire brigade over here, and I think a chain saw counts as a utensil. Tasted superb, especially with a vat of Malbec.
