Title: Army railways - pipe dreams
Post by: CyclingSid on December 17, 2017, 12:30:09
You might have noticed in the media the Chief of the Defence Staff warning about threats to communication cables and the Internet.
Possibly less noticed was his suggestion that he would like to see the re-creation of a Royal Logistics Corps (previously RCT) railway squadron, see https://rusi.org/event/annual-chief-defence-staff-lecture-2017 about 09:30 in.
Is this realistic? My first thought is route knowledge, you can't just take a train driver with a train of military kit and sail off through the Channel Tunnel. Does the appropriate rolling stock still exist, etc?
Apart from the fact that MoD is vastly overspent, is this a pipe dream, or the old service technique of ordering twice as much as you want when you know your order is routinely cut in half.

Regards route knowledge in the time of conflict or servile National emergency there is only one rule .......... and that's there are no rules

I can see some logic in his thinking, but the chunnel as a military target is a soft one as are railways and highways in this modern day drone and cruise missile
