Title: Peculiar Dream / Nightmare
Post by: PhilWakely on February 20, 2018, 20:02:10
I had the most peculiar dream last night.

A recurring theme of my dreams around this time of year is taking my university final exams (despite leaving university 40 years ago!) Happened again last night, but this time, for some unknown reason I was taking one important paper in a room overlooking Paddington station - which proved very distracting.

But, the most worrying aspect of the dream was the prospect of the journey home. I was unsettled before the exam as the date was apparently, Thursday, 29th March 2018 - Maundy Thursday and I was worried about getting the train back to Exeter amongst the crowds. Having walked out of the exam room at the end, with an almost completely blank answer sheet, I then looked at Journeycheck and was faced with the following message.................

Quote
19:03 London Paddington to Plymouth due 22:22
Facilities on the 19:03 London Paddington to Plymouth due 22:22.
This is due to more trains than usual needing repairs at the same time.
Will be formed of 2 coaches instead of 8.
Refreshment facilities will not be available.
Toilet facilities will not be available.
First Class facilities will not be available.

20:03 London Paddington to Plymouth due 23:36
20:03 London Paddington to Plymouth due 23:36 will be cancelled.
This is due to train crew being unavailable.

21:03 London Paddington to Plymouth due 00:40
21:03 London Paddington to Plymouth due 00:40 will be cancelled.
This is due to train crew being unavailable.

Aaaaaaaaaarrgggggghhh!

Thankfully, I then woke up   :o :o

If you hadn't mentioned dreams/nightmares in the thread title, I think most of us would have read it as factual and wouldn't have been surprised at all!

....except I doubt even GWR would send a 2 coach 165 all the way to Plymouth.

According to a very old post I found elsewhere
Quote
I don't think there is anything really stopping a pacer getting into Paddington ...
and they have been to Reading

So perhaps not a 165?

I feel your pain, PhilWakely, but it is worth it for the sense of relief when you wake up and realise it wasn't real after all.

I once explained a terrible nightmare I had, one of those that has you waking up screaming and sweating, to a former colleague, previously last seen when I retired.
FT, N!: "It was awful. I was sat at my desk in the office."
Former colleague: "What happened next?"
FT, N! "That was all of it."

For some reason I'm reminded of the old Bob Monkhouse chestnut: "I want to die like my father, peacefully in his sleep, not screaming and terrified, like his passengers."

Or the time I dreamt I was in an important meeting with colleagues, the boss, the regional manager and a minister, and when I woke up, I found that I was.

I forgot to mention that, in my dream world, this was the 19:03

Railway based dream for me last night.

I dreamt I was working for Iarnród Éireann at Cork Kent Station.

Working in the ticket office, on platforms and in telephone enquiries. The latter using 1970s style 700 series rotary dial phones.

I was also living in. With a bedsit above the entrance hall.

Alarming! You could soon be repeating whilst lying on a couch.*

*Finn's not allowed on the couch.

I've had a dream in which I was driving a "heritage" DMU on a line resembling a rollercoaster gradient profile.

Wirksworth to Ravenstor, Waterfall to Hebron, Cass to Whittaker, or am I reading too much reality into this? What is the steepest heritage line?

The dream was a horrific exaggeration of reality, but probably based on real-life incidents.
