Title: Fire at Penzance Station - 17 Apr 18
Post by: bobm on April 17, 2018, 20:53:59
Reports of an HST power car on fire at Penzance station.

Station has been evacuated and closed.

I understand it is the country end power car and is inside the covered area of the station.

Seems that an HST Power Car has caught fire under the station roof:

The sleeper (21.45 to Paddington) left 52 minutes late but should make that up en route.

Suspect there will be one cancellation from Penzance in the morning unless quick repairs are possible as Long Rock will be an HST set short.

I’m in our Angarrack property, sleeper went by at roughly 2255. A HST in the up direction went past at 2235 but I havent worked out which one!

Edit embarrassingly the 2235 up was a voyager. I guessed from engine tones!

Uneducated guess - but perhaps it has been decided to send the damaged HST to Laira which is better equipped to give heavy maintenance to HSTs than Long Rock.

Being on the Penzance end at least it’s on the rear so can be pulled somewhere on one engine.

It was all smoke by all accounts. The orange lighting on the photos and videos is the station lighting!

09:00 Penzance to London Paddington due 14:01
09:00 Penzance to London Paddington due 14:01 will be started from Plymouth.
It will no longer call at Penzance, St Erth, Camborne, Redruth, Truro, St Austell, Par, Bodmin Parkway and Liskeard.
This is due to a fault on this train.

The 7.16pm (not 1916) Penzance to Plymouth was totally unconnected and was cancelled the best part of 2 hours before the fire.   The unit was in trouble and terminated at Saltash on the way down.

Is it possible that a driver got over-enthusiastic about the rebranding of HSTs as 'Castles', and set fire to some coal?

Probably a turbo charger at fault, used to be a regular occurrence in the early days of the 125's the turbos on the Paxman engines were notorious for spontaneous combustion   ;D

Yea, Turbo problem but cause not known.  MTU investigating and set still at Long Rock Depot
