Title: Images - an update
Post by: grahame on May 07, 2018, 08:36:03
We have a new member looking to post images within his content ... using [ img ] to [ /img ] tags.   I use my own hosting for this so not best placed to recommend current best places for such hosting.   Member's recommendations welcome please!

I'm using the online https://imgbb.com I'll usually reduce my images down to around 800x600 pixels before uploading.

imgbb.com s a place for hosting links only, not somewhere to store photos.

Thanks, Bignosemac ... I have just tried that / uploaded a picture to https://ibb.co/fDAbdn .

Will embed it here

Unfortunately the images do not appear on my MacBook Pro or iPad but do so on an old iPhone!

Ah! Hmmm... I used imgbb for the images bradshaw refers to  because I noticed that some I uploaded as attachments earlier seemed only to be accessible to logged-on members of the forum. In the past I've used my own hosting, but the site I use for that got recycled in a moment of pressing urgency and all the images were deleted.

Not sure what's best really... any thoughts? What's your preference grahame? My take is that images on this site are just for news or entertainment value, so it doesn't matter if they are lost after a fairly short time...

I host my own, and they're on the same server as the main site - though a different domain. I'm fortunate to have such a hosting setup, together with the background / knowledge of how to use it and the security that allows me to modify and add to what's there but should be pretty effective in preventing others doing the same.

We've said in the past (discussed 'behind the counter') that we are not a general image hosting service - we don't have the server resource nor the admin and management resource, all of which is donated / volunteered here. Instead, we recommend people to use third party hosting (I suppose I am my own third party).   Attachments to posts provide a lightweight way of adding images - effectively as an appendix to a post, and only visible to members, and even then only when looking at the thread directly and not through the 'recent' tag.

Now - that's not ideal.   I would prefer to host all the images that are within all the threads on this forum.  That would save us the issues of images being lost when a hosting site goes away or changes its policy, and it would allow our team to provide somewhat more help as and when members need help.   I disagree with Red Squirrel - it does matter if the images are lost on what has become a valuable archive, but I'll have to admit that in the great run of things it's not exactly a top-10 problem.   Not sure where I am going here ... headed off to do an experiment.

OK - experimental thread at http://www.firstgreatwestern.info/coffeeshop/index.php?topic=20062 .

It would appear that I can take an attachment, use "view image" on my browser to directly load just the image, then include the URL it gives me in another post to have the attachment additionally public viewable and within the body of a post.   I am not sure what happens if I remove the attachment from the original post.     We may have a seed of something here

How about Wikimedia Commons? I can see quite a lot of advantages...

Like Graham I host my own images.  Mainly because it gives me control over them and I am not beholden to the whims of a third party who may decide to suddenly charge or delete my files.

Another benefit is I can see if someone has cross-posted an image of mine from here somewhere else - and yes it has happened.  I am not overly concerned in most cases although it never hurts for someone to ask before doing so.

Wikimedia Commons is, I sincerely hope, unlikely to disappear overnight. Although this is not essential, I am very happy to surrender my copyright, thought I appreciate that not everyone is. My only reservation is that I would not use it for 'trivial' images; anything that goes there should be properly captioned and categorised so that others can find it and use it.

Now that I have established how to use it on this forum, I think I will adopt this method for anything which has 'archive' value. For ever, for everyone - as someone once said.

Indeed ... you will currently find an image of mine on each of the following pages:

Where something gets out of hand, I have the ability to switch images depending on what page they're to appear in

A few months ago I used iCloud.com to host the image. This seems to work well.
