Title: Princes Risborough to Chinnor
Post by: SandTEngineer on June 07, 2018, 09:24:51
Some very good news of another preserved line finally reconnected to the mainline network:

Quote
On Wednesday 15 August, the Chinnor & Princes Risborough Railway (C&PRR) will become the nearest main line connected heritage railway to London, with a cross-platform interchange facility when the newly restored platform is opened at Princes Risborough. The steam railway will be under 25 miles and 40 minutes from Marylebone.

The 100% volunteer operated C&PRR is delighted to officially announce that following the latest project review of track and platform construction progress at Princes Risborough, the new main line interchange facility will open on 15 August.

The inaugural train will be for guests who have supported the project, such as the Department for Transport with their £75,000 grant made in August 2016, Network Rail and Chiltern Railways who have worked tirelessly in this period alongside C&PRR volunteers to make sure the project was completed.

Public services will operate in the afternoon of 15 August running as ‘The Watlington Flyer’ travelling non-stop in around 15 minutes each way for the four-mile trip in each direction. Tickets at the normal Adult/Concession/Child price will only be sold in advance - they will be valid for one return journey between Princes Risborough and Chinnor or vice versa, and they will go on sale on Sunday 01 July 2018.

Until 15 August, trains will only operate between Chinnor and Thame Junction enabling the final track alterations to be carried out at Princes Risborough. Summer Thursday streaming on 16, 23, 30 August services will also only operate to Thame Junction.

Saturday 18 August will be a normal operating day but with trains commencing at 11.00 from Chinnor and 11.40 from Princes Risborough, with tickets valid for one round-trip only. From Sunday 19 August and subsequent weekend operating days will be as per 18 August, but tickets will be valid all day as normal.

It is indeed an impressive bit of engineering with many complex tasks and challenges successfully overcome over the last few years. I was on railway operations there a few weeks ago with a neat looking and lengthened platform 4 (old Watlington bay platform). My hat off to all those who gave so much of their time, money and effort on this project. I look forward to signaling passenger trains into the new platform in a few month's time.

The heading is about the Cholsey & Wallingford Railway link with GWR. The text is about the Chinnor and Princes Risborough Railway.

As noted in an earlier post  ;D

It may be a good idea for one of us to split the topic though ... I'll be in my hotel late this evening - will do so from there is nor-one has done it beforehand

Maybe a Freudian mis-posting  referring to the proposed Watlington to Wallingford Railway.

Congratultions to The Chinnor and Princes Risborough Railway on their new interchange, opened in Princes Risborough, "allowing passengers to take a steam train from Chinnor and then board a 21st century train into London." - see more at The BBC (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-beds-bucks-herts-45207616)

It has been a wonderful effort all round and I am sorry that my day job prevented me from attending our opening day, which I believe went spectacularly well.  Thanks also to this board, where the availability of government funding was first mentioned and was thus brought to the railway's attention.

We are now a two-ended railway; one with a direct connection to London and the greater Chiltern network. That comes with great benefits but also responsibilities.  I am looking forward to my volunteer shifts on our new, extended railway and to welcoming all board members here to come and enjoy a visit (https://www.chinnorrailway.co.uk/article.php/2/visit-the-railway) to our friendly line, or indeed join our merry band of enthusiastic (but 'professional') amateur railway men and women.

I hope Grahame will excuse a blatant plug, but tomorrow (Saturday 18th August) is our first all-day DMU Bubble run into Platform 4 at Princes Risborough (https://www.chinnorrailway.co.uk/product.php?xProd=203). Our normal running day is a Sunday.

If anyone on here is visiting us on Saturday, please introduce yourself to the Duty Manager  :D .

For the absence of doubt, this is not Chinnor nor is it Princes Risborough. Nor is it Taunton! It just struck me as an appropriate use of a picture I took in June.

Transport and Works Act 1992 - Transfer of Responsibility for Railway Track at Princes Risborough

The Chinnor and Princes Risborough Railway Association Limited (CPRRA) is applying to the Secretary of State for Transport for an Order under the Transport and Works Act 1992 (the Transfer Order) to transfer the statutory rights and responsibilities for some of the track at Princes Risborough Station, including an approximately half-mile length of railway track, from Network Rail Infrastructure Limited (NR) to CPRRA for the purposes of our heritage railway undertaking.  The land on which these tracks stand is already leased to us.

We are not seeking here permission for any development.  This is existing railway.  The Transfer Order is solely about transferring statutory responsibility for the relevant part of the railway line.  We have sent information to neighbouring residents and businesses in Horsenden Lane, Summerleys Road, and Northmill, Princes Risborough.  We are also consulting the appropriate authorities (e.g. Princes Risborough Town Council, Chinnor Parish Council, and Buckinghamshire Council).

So ... land owned by Network Rail and track looked after by Network Rail becomes land owned by Network Rail track looked after by the association from and including the branch line platform at Princes Risborough along the branch that used to go via Thame and Cowley to Oxford as far as the branch off the branch turned off towards Chinnor.

Not an unusual arrangement, the lease of the land protects it for any future railway use while freeing NRIL of railway operational complexity also frees CPRRA of having complying to NRIL track safety rules etc and will be able to work under their own operating and track safety rules

I think the Statement of Aims (https://www.chinnorrailway.co.uk/shopimages/locations/4.%20Statement%20of%20Aims.pdf) sums it up well - and gives a very nice potted history of our line.  :)

One of my jobs is being the mentioned 'Person in Charge' at Princes Risborough

Ian Mansfield who writes the blog 'Ian Visits' toured our signalbox on our recent open day - the only one this year I believe - and has reported on his time at our site - please click here (https://www.ianvisits.co.uk/blog/2020/10/13/restoring-the-princes-risborough-railway-signal-box/). He has posted some nice pictures accompanied by an informative narrative. Many thanks to Ian for coming along and for his article.

For those of a signalling bent, the operating ground frame - working the current run-around cross-over at the country end of the layout - can be seen between the yellow painted quadrant plates in Ian's photo no. 4 ' The main levers room'. The diagram for this Princes Risborough North Ground Frame can be seen in photo no. 16 'Signal layout diagram', where it is described as: 125 levers including 17 spaces - 102 spares. I think it fair to describe it as the country's largest ground frame! Any questions and I will be happy to answer those I can.
