Title: Railway poor performance angers customers who take our their ire on staff
Post by: grahame on July 20, 2018, 20:29:36
From The Morning Star (https://www.morningstaronline.co.uk/article/tssa-says-rail-crisis-should-be-treated-national-emergency)

Quote
RAIL workers are demanding that the government declare a “national emergency” following warnings that station staff face rising danger from angry commuters.

...

Not so sure at the "National Emergency" level for Wiltshire, but even here customer facing staff are feeling the extreme unhappiness of the railway's customers.  Demotivational in the extreme for staff.

And some of the problems are caused by their own colleagues and unions:

In GWR land arguments over Sunday working and 2 guards on a  10 coach IET and away from GWR the containing dispute over DOO when the fight was lost in the 1980's.
I appreciate that management both In GWR and DFT are to blame as well.

Both unions and management need to realise if they don't sort these issues out soon they will end up arguing over who gets made redundant; as once a passenger is lost to the railway it will take a long time to get them back.

I thought agreement had been reached that only one guard was needed on a 2x5 IET providing there was a "responsible person" in one five car unit and the train manager in the other.

It had, but as I understand it the RMT have withdrawn the agreement after some sort of incident (I don't know details) involving the responsible person who was not a train manager in the second set.

I did previously post the anouncement here: http://www.firstgreatwestern.info/coffeeshop/index.php?topic=18792.msg242326#msg242326
