I got a clip of 8mm cine film which I took from the footplate of a BR standard tank coming down that incline after we had been up to Easton to collect a consignment of Portland stone.

No.10 - Rhyl No.2 Signalbox

(Well you would expect an S&T Engineer to get that one).......

Seen in better days (note the lookout and bell and the post device at the middle bottom - a 'Firemans Call Box'): https://c1.staticflickr.com/4/3826/9517913442_87f5157254_b.jpg

Correct so far ...

4. Lynton - Stuving
5. Marchwood - PhilWakely
6. Penhelig - Rob on the Hill
8. Portland - Bradshaw
10. Rhyl - SandTEnghineer

Sorry - No. 9 is not Holyhead, and No. 10 is Rhyl rather than Shrewsbury.

Halfway there!

Don't know where no 9 is but how great to see a bus / coach station just a few paces away from the train doors.

Does look good, doesn't it.   Passengers photographed not thrilled to be using those buses which were running as rail replacement for that train though!

Sorry - it isn't  (hint, Holiday thread ... no Taunton or neighbouring stations  ;D )

2. Huddersfield.

7 = Shawfair.

And those two are both correct.

Long shot for 3 - Aviemore?

Good attempt - and headed the right way.   Not quite long enough shot!

3: Inverness-ish?

I know it isn't (partly because there's a station sign in Arriva Trains Wales colours, and partly because who would go there on their holidays) but the ramp in 1 is ever so like Perry Barr in the West Midlands.

The modern(er) railway seems to be characterised by long and stark ramps.

Holds hand up in admission.   Been on holiday to the Birmingham Canal Navigations - including canals up to the Walsall area.

3: Inverness-ish?

Not sure how to answer that, or how "ish" would be defined.   The train I caught after taking the photo at that station was destined for Inverness.

We did the BCN Challenge (https://bcnsociety.com/about/marathon-challenge/) a couple of years ago including the Perry Barr Flight. The Tame Valley is actually a surprisingly beautiful canal, but possibly the least boated on the BCN, and that's saying something!

(But basset44 has definitely got it - slightly annoyed I didn't spot that myself as I've passed through Ludlow a hundred times...)

It easy - leaving just No. 3.

Although 24 hours not yet up ... open field, would anyone care to say (or guess) where that final picture is?

Knowing Grahame has recently visited Scotland and his tribulations when his train from Wick was cancelled I wonder if No 3 is that, Wick. I cant remember Wick station itself apart from its overall roof, the loco release and run-round loop and the overgrown sidings on the south side of the station. One station on that line which I can definitely say its not is Dunrobin Castle as the photo shows the station depicted to have, or maybe had, a power supply.

It isn't Wick (I have pictures of Wick but not with me - currently at Yeovil Pen Mill) but you're not terribly far off.

According to your published itinerary, the only other places you set out from on a train towards Inverness were Kyle of Lochalsh and Georgemas - of which the latter fits much better as "not terribly far".

Indeed it is Gerogemas Junction - photo taken in to the old ticket hall / waiting room holding my phone at the least dirty point in the glass.

This is a redundant station building.  Does not look like the sort of thing to easily be relocated, but would make an excellent holiday let / home ... great for someone who likes rail.   But I expect there are far too many places around ...

I suggest someone tries to save the "heritage" British Rail Inverness area poster though before any renovation works start!
