Title: Worst Station in Surrey
Post by: grahame on August 21, 2018, 13:17:21

Surrey's 'worst' train station? You've decided

It has a direct service to Gatwick Airport, but sadly for those lugging their luggage "the platforms are reached solely by several flights of outdoor stairs"

Rail travel - something that is an all too familiar experience for many residents of Surrey... and, in some cases, not for good reasons.

Reliability, overcrowding and service issues are often at the forefront of passengers' minds when using South Western Railway or Southern.

But it's not just the trains that matter - the stations we get on and off at are important as well.

After the underpass ceiling at Leatherhead station collapsed recently, we asked Surrey Live readers for their nominations for any particularly bad railway stations around the county.

And from all the responses we received, there was one station that came out as the, well, loser...

I'll let you follow the link to find out which station .....

I initially agreed with their conclusions. Then I got thinking about my journeys from home to Gatwick Airport and decided it wasn't too bad. Most stations on my 3 train journey (Bookham, Leatherhead, Dorking) involve me walking both up and down stairs with my suitcase on footbridges or subways. At Deepdene however I only have to climb the stairs and not descend. Gatwick is easier because I could use the lift but normally ignore the signs telling me not to put my suitcase on the escalator.

Similar to the person who ignored them in front of me, their suitcase slipped and then crashed into me.  I ended up with a badly bruised and cut leg and a cracked phone screen. More than a year on, I still have the scars.  Not suggesting you were not in total control but, understandably, I have rather strong views on the subject!

Sorry to hear that BobM. I have seen people on escalators not really in control of their luggage. I place my light fabric suitcase on the step above me and hold it steadily. If it were to fall it would hit me. It's not really a heavy case because as a man I don't need lots of clothes, shoes, hair dryers, curling tongs, irons, more shoes etc. when I go away. ;D
