Washington?

I think you may be on the right lines there ... though not quite way I expected the answer to be expressed.

Mornington Crescent!..

Playing under infinite improbability drive rules, that would be feasible, but then so would be an answer of any shape.  ;D

I'd say "The" again.

I'd say "The" again.

You are so, so close ... that's what I thought until I looked it up.

Only on rails?

If not, then Chatham.

I'm not sure what logical rabbit hole you've got stuck head first down there. But "City" and "" should both work.

I was thinking of the three letter station codes but can't make anything out of them (yet):

THE, AML, WNS, SLQ

Nothing?  The station on the Washington Metro does not have any word before the relevant shape.

Correct!

Correct!

The Point
Acton Main Line
Winnersh Triangle
St Leonards Warrior Square
Pentagon

One, Two, Three, Four and Five vertex shapes at the end of Station names.

"The Pentagon" is the name of the USA government building (rather than the station)  which was why that was so close, and I would have been tempted to accept City as in "Pentagon City" although that is not the end of the name.

If only we were not restricted to railway stations then I expect the clue for the next in the sequence would be Reading.

I was quite sad when the sequence ran out ....
