Title: 10th November 2018 - RailFuture National Conference, Reading
Post by: grahame on August 27, 2018, 09:46:07
RailFuture National Conference, Reading - https://www.railfuture.org.uk/conferences

Speakers:

Howard Smith, Operations Director, Crossrail, Transport for London (Crossrail)
(talking about: An insight into Crossrail and its forthcoming launch)

Anna Holbrook, Sponsor for Western Rail Link to Heathrow, Network Rail
(talking about: Western rail access to Heathrow Airport project)

Howard Elliot, Project Engineering Manager, Network Rail
(talking about: Electrification on the Great Western project)

Cllr Tony Page, Reading Borough Council
(talking about: Reading Transport and Integration)

Ian Baxter, SLC Rail
(talking about: Stations and projects they are progressing, including reading Green Park, Worcestershire Parkway and Wantage Grove)

Graham Cross, Chief Executive, Heathrow Southern Railway

Early Bird discount - RailFuture members who sign up to go along can get a reduction until 31st August.   Interestingly, 16 to 25 railcard holders (but not holders of other railcards) can get an even better reduction - I think I smell an attempt to convert rail future away from it's "old men" image.

Is that the complete list of speakers? If so it hardly seems to be a national conference. With the exception of the talk about Worcestershire Parkway, Most of those speakers seem to be talking about projects on or near the GWML to the east of Reading.

I believe that the RailFuture approach for their nationwide conferences is to choose (for the most part) excellent speakers in the same region as the event / organising branch, so that the event is very much a showcase of what's good in that region for other regions to learn from.

I attended their late spring / early summer event in Carlisle - and found it very interesting to learn about Thornhill, the campaign for extending the Borders Railway to Carlisle, progress on the Settle and Carlisle, and electric proposals across The Penines and within the Northern Powerhouse;  I should add there was some excellent stuff on effective campaigning in the rail environment, and a look forward to the RailFuture future.

As someone who occasionally helps organise events, I am very much aware that speakers occasionally have to pull out close to an event - so I would treat the list with a pinch of salt in terms of being "full and final".  One of our forum members has a national role with RailFuture, and is in the organising branch - so I expect you'll get a further follow ...

Wonder if they will have actually started Reading Green Park by then?

Or completed Cow Lane Bridge.

It looks a fantastic line up of speakers , far better than conferences that cost many hundreds of pounds, Grahame is right, Railfuture are showcasing the Thames Valley , there is probably more going in here, than anywhere else in the Country.
Do not underestimate the scale of investment going on, it’s easy to take it for granted , don’t forget how bad it was in the 1980,s.

I am definatly going , lots to learn and CPD .

Sadly I don't think I can make it. Do they publish summaries of presentations?

Bookings still open ... until 8th ... https://www.railfuture.org.uk/conferences/

There were four or five Coffee Shop members at the GWR Stakeholder's meeting in Paddington a couple of weeks ago, and at least three - possibly more - at Minehead last Tuesday evening.  Looks like we'll top those numbers at Reading a week from today.

Lunch is 55 minutes from 13:15 - I suggest we all gather directly the morning session finishes and rather than stand in the inevitable buffet queueueue for 10 minutes, to grab a group photo.   By which time the wait for lunch will be shorter.

If you don't know what I look like:

and - however frightening that may look (sorry!) ... I would love it if members say "hello" if they see me around ... anywhere.

Advice is that limited places remain available for the RailFuture event tomorrow ... if anyone's coming to this at the last minute - come along and you'll probably be able to get in - subject to limits of venue capacity.   As there are no rumours of The Queen, Gemma Collins, Cameron Cole, Tim Bowles, Francis Drake or Iasmbird Brunowl turning up, I would not expect queues out of the door.

Good to see five members there ... meet a couple of new faces.

I'm currently on the infamous 17:36 from Swindon - not too infamous now that it's two carriages.  No less than 84 passengers on board and it's a Saturday! ...  Feels very rewarding / job done ... a train that didn't exist five years ago ...

112 on the train off Swindon Chippenham ... 31 off and 6 on at Melksham so that's 118/37.   Been in a conference all day - excellent speakers, but warm and a bit cramped.  Out for a walk ... back on later I expect.

Edit - 112 was off Chippenham not off Swindon - corrected.  It was 84 off Swindon.   An estimate of between 15 and 20 got off at Chippenham, so that means that around 50 to 55 got on there - impossible to count these days without someone on the platform, perhaps even at each door.

It's all about the group / the members.   I know that at least five of us were there yesterday ... and I managed to get four of us together for a group photo.    Good to see you, gentlemen.   I found the whole day very useful ... and increasingly I see Coffee Shop represented by a significant scattering of member in all sorts of events and places.  And remember - it's you folks who make it ...

I had a one line acceptance speech imposed on me by the chair who knows how I can go on.   I chose (snap decision; I was not pre-alerted to our success on this one) to tell the wider audience about the Coffee Shop and get them to pick up flyers in the tea break.   What I SHOULD have done is the big "Thank you to ..." speech, but that would have gone way beyond a single line anyway ...

That’s only partly true.  I thought we were doing the photo downstairs where the light was better.

Press release from RailFuture

Quote
Rail User Group award winners

Winners of Railfuture's annual Rail User Group Awards have just been announced. Now in their seventh year, the awards were presented at Railfuture's annual national autumn conference in Reading by Vice-President Stewart Palmer.

“The judges were so impressed with the nominations this year that they decided to make two Special Awards” said awards organiser Roger Blake. “The Chinnor and Princes Risborough Railway won their award, received by Chairman Danny Woodward, for reopening their heritage service into Princes Risborough mainline station in mid-August.  West Coast Railways were recognised for launching their special loco-hauled ‘Lakelander’ service for Windermere.  In a couple of weeks in June when Northern withdrew all their services, they carried 17,000 passengers in just that fortnight.”

The judging panel of Railfuture Vice-Presidents drew on the expertise of well-known industry figures such as Ian Brown CBE FCILT and Paul Abell, and included Railfuture’s honorary president Christian Wolmar.

The Clara Zilahi Award for best campaigner was won by Graham Collett, co-Vice-Chair of Yorkshire branch, who was visited by Ian Brown.  The award specifically paid tribute to Graham’s lead on behalf of Railfuture in responses to two important consultations, both by the Office of Rail and Road.  The first was on Improving Assisted Travel, leading to his subsequent participation by invitation in a follow-on ORR workshop on the subject.  The second response was on the impact of the May timetable on Northern and TransPennine services and their passengers, and again an invitation for Railfuture to participate in a workshop on the ORR’s interim report and contribute to their final report.

The Oliver Lovell Award for best new group was won by the South East Wales and West of England Business Link (SEWWEB) with its campaign to develop the connectivity of a corridor via Bristol between Newport and Weston-super-Mare.

The best newsletter award winner was ‘Track Record’ from the Huddersfield Penistone Sheffield Rail Users’ Association. Vice-president Paul Abell, a former editor of Rail Professional magazine, was so impressed that he visited their Chairman in person.

The award for best campaign went to the Hastings & Rother Rail Users’ Alliance (six local RUGs, including four affiliated to Railfuture) for ‘The Eastbourne Overlap’, an innovative timetable solution to the proposed split of the through Brighton-Ashford hourly 2-car diesel service at Hastings in May negotiated with GTR.  The replacement 4-car electric from Brighton runs to Hastings as planned, but the 2-car diesel from Ashford continues west of Hastings to Eastbourne – ‘The Eastbourne Overlap’ – thereby increasing the previous 3tph service between Eastbourne and Hastings, via Bexhill, to 4tph.  The HRRUA members are Ore Transport Group, MarshLink Action Group, Three Oaks and Winchelsea Action on Rail Transport, St. Leonards & Hastings Rail Improvement Programme, Bexhill Rail Action Group, and the Normans Bay Residents Association.

The best website award went to the Great Western Coffee Shop – a virtual online rail user group and forum run by a group of GWR customers with three active administrators, and a further nine moderators!
