Title: Where were bobm and I today, 26th September 2018?
Post by: JayMac on September 26, 2018, 20:49:54
bobm and I out for a country pub lunch and a drive in a loaner car. Took in some railway infrastructure. Two locations.

Where's this?

No guesses at all. I guess they're a little tough.

Clues then.

First pic. A scrambled alternative for hostility?
Second pic. Joan and Carla's flat traverse?

I'm thinking some flavour of Yeovil.

Second picture is Collins Lane Level Crossing, Purton near Swindon on the Golden Valley line methinks.

#2:    Collins Lane level crossing (Purton nr Swindon)?

I'm thinking somewhere on the Somerset Levels. Maybe, perhaps, possibly. The "clues" are as mysterious as the pictures themselves!

curses! beaten by fourteen seconds!  ;)  (during which I checked google street view - wondered why it showed as single track - and decided streetview must predate the redoubling....)

Both correct. As you posted almost simultaneously you can share the point!

(Joan) Collins (Carla) Lane (flat) Level (traverse) Crossing.

Neither picture is in Somerset. I do occasionally venture beyond the county boundary.  :P ;D

No 1 is only a few miles away, at Minety crossing (not exactly at Minety).

In this case the Google Earth picture is even older (2009), and not only shows a slightly tatty single track but gates and an operative to heave them to and fro.

Correct.

An alternative word for 'hostility' is ENMITY. Unscramble that and you have MINETY.

And yes, the crossing isn't that near to Minety. Which explains us not finding it initially, despite bobm having been there before. It's nearer Upper Minety and was easier to find once there thanks to the road being called 'Crossing Lane'.

So that's where we were... (it was a good lunch!).   ;D

Will post more photos later.

Meanwhile here's a couple more pics of mine. With added interloper.

And, if you'd like to see the crossings as they were pre-redoubling of the line between Swindon and Kemble, then here's the link to bobm's previous visit. Last time he relied on public transport. This time he was chauffeured!

What's it like? My cycling club sometimes go to Cricklade but we always go to the Red Lion, for some reason – I think it's because it has some bike racks outside and a big courtyard, but it looks like the White Hart has that too. So maybe it's just someone's favourite beer...

With apologies for the delay, have now posted pictures to the redoubling thread http://www.firstgreatwestern.info/coffeeshop/index.php?topic=3266.msg247794#msg247794 (http://www.firstgreatwestern.info/coffeeshop/index.php?topic=3266.msg247794#msg247794)

Meanwhile here is one to add to the interloper above.

Menu caters for most tastes.  Main courses around the £10-£14 mark.  They also offer Kangeroo, Ostrich and Buffalo steaks.

I think they only had two real ales on pumps - both Arkells.  (and a shortage of handle glasses...)
