Alterations to services at Southampton Central
Due to urgent repairs to the track at Southampton Central some lines are closed.
Train services running through this station may be diverted via Eastleigh. Disruption is expected until the end of the day.

Customer Advice
Owing to one of the main lines through Southampton Central railway station being closed for urgent repairs it will be necessary to divert the Salisbury to Portsmouth Harbour and return services via an alternative route NOT calling at Southampton Central but calling additionally at Chandlers Ford and Eastleigh.
Any customers travelling to / from Southampton Central should change at Eastleigh or Romsey.

Six hours work requiring the blocking of two lines to repair a blown joint and 30ft of rail.  Repair work to be carried out overnight tonight, until then the down line near Southampton Tunnel remains closed.

Silly question - is today an SWR strike day?   If so, there might be a silver lining in that Chandler's Ford does get a train service?    Bit of an open secret that the loss of the Romsey Rocket service to industrial action is having a negative and frustrating effect on the CRP there.

Answer - no. But note that the five-day strike starts next Tuesday (23rd-27th).

Fortunately of course the tunnel has bi-direction signalling on both lines.  Interesting to watch the signallers filter the services through the one remaining line on OTT maps - slight thinning of services required, but much better than had traditional one direction signalling been installed.

When the tunnel was being gauge cleared a few years ago they ran a very near normal offpeak timetable over one line, for most working days over a few weeks.  IIRC the Cardiff trains were one of the routes that worked normally, it was the local Portsmouth stopper that terminated at St Denys, we had to change onto the Romsey-Salisbury service which continued to run.  I think a fairly significant number of freights ran via Laverstock and Andover.
