Title: Closure of Old Oak Common (81A) December 2018
Post by: Electric train on November 15, 2018, 20:42:27
The 7th /  8th December will see GWR closing Old Oak Common TMD.   This once mighty depot has seen a progressive closure and demolition over the recent years.

There is however the Elizabeth Line Train Care Facility and on the other side of the main line North Pole, so there is still maintenance and operations life left on the site;  however for many like myself that have worked at the Oak the final closure of the HST Shed and the withdrawal of main line maintenance as being as sad day.  I can remember working in the new HST Shed in 1976 as an apprentice a vastly different working environment to the Factory

Old Oak Common (81A) 17 March 1906 - 7 December 2018 you have the served the railway well

Does this mean the 1733 Paignton and 1803 Penzance will finally be IET. They seem very wary of using IET's on these two services.

I can remember "bunking" it as a kid in 1963 when there were still Castles, Counties and Halls in the roundhouse...

Not necessarily, as these two services end the day away from London, so could be candidates for HST running until they are all withdrawn next year

Seem to remember the Old Oak Panel Box closed in 1993 As Paddington was resignalled to the then Slough new box, until that went also.Hence the reason for
signals starting with SN1 SN3 SN5 And so on.

I don't where to look for the diagrams but I am sure the 17.33 Paignton comes out of Old Oak Common works passenger London-Paignton-Newton Abbot then empty to Laira

Tonight the 1733 (1C91) has 8 coaches. That means it must be a HST.

The 1803 (1C92) came off Old Oak Common, so that too points to it being a HST. Although anyone fancying a Friday night dinner would have been disappointed. No Pullman service on it tonight.

That was Old Oak Common Panel Signal Box, bobm may have been refereeing to Old Oak Common Yard Signal Box with is access bridge off of the Grand Union Canal towpath.

The OOC Panel Box was the first of its kind.

Its is highly unlikely HST will go into North Pole as that is Hitachie and not GWR; also its is not configured to service HSTs

Out to Reading, I believe.   Have I heard something about the noise issues they're causing there when ticking over, or was I imagining that?   Sounds like Reading has been set up to take HSTs only for a relatively short period - doesn't sound like that's an efficient way to spend money - perhaps the result of having to deal with a slippage in one schedule or another.

HSTs as well? Reading's "shed" will have Electrostars, Turbos, the Night Riveria stock, and an old fashioned shunter as well. The town's depot  will not have seen such variety since the old shed hosted everything from 14xxs to Castles!

The odd HST has been parking up here at Reading TCD during the day, and it was used by quite a few HSTs a Christmas or two ago when Paddington was closed.

The final HST ECS movement from Old Oak Common is this Saturday, 8th December 2018. Subject to the usual operational caveats of course.

5C24 1645 Old Oak Common - London Paddington 1705
1C24 1730 London Paddington - Weston-super-Mare 1950

End of an era.

Many thanks to our planners and Network Rail, there has been a platform alteration following our request for the last HST from 81A Old Oak Common Saturday 8th December 5C24 16+45 to now arrive 17+04 into Paddington Platform 1.
That is the plan, but is all subject to change depending on what happens on the day

The Northen part, that is where the "Factory", turntable (former round house site), "Pullman Shop" and Corrination Sidings are ocupied by the new Elizebeth Line train care facility, this is the principle depot for the Elizebeth Line.

The Southern part, that is the caridge sheds, HST depot and eventually the Siemans HEX depot will be demolished to make way for the HS2 Old Oak Common Station.

on the South side of the mainline, North Pole is the Hitachie depote for the IEP class 800's

Yes, end of an era. Farewell 81A, Old Oak Common HST Depot. A nice touch from the Thames Valley Signalling Centre, also seen on Tracksy.

A couple of videos of the final HST off of 81A, Old Oak Common:

Videos courtesy of forum member James Vertigan.

The leading power car for the 1730 to Weston-super-Mare was, appropriately, 43093 with its 'Legends of the Great Western' livery and its 'Old Oak Common HST Depot 1976-2018' nameplate. Added to these at the rear of the power car was the depot's oak tree and crest logo with the legend 'Old Oak Common - History Makers' surrounding the logo, along with the sub line 'Last HST off Old Oak Common Depot 8th December 2018'.

The line with the TD berth showing 'GOOD' remains in the final layout as its the emergency escape route from the new CROSSRAIL depot.

So ground signal SN6092 will stay then.

Have you got a plan drawn?.

Comment noted and understood - and these things take so much time too.  I could almost certainly provide a one off solution to getting something "pretty big" available here such as hosting it on a link , if that's the only thing holding you back.

With regards to the track layout, if you look at Google Earth satellite image you can clearly see what the Crossrail depot track layout is. This image must have been from about July 2018.

The berths and position lights on the signalling maps do not correlate with what is physically on the ground.

The track layout shown on Traksy is wrong between Ladbroke Grove and Old Oak Common, whereas the Open Train Times layout is correct. The only error I can see on the OTT Paddington map is at Royal Oak, where signal-berths 52 and 54 are the wrong way round and the crossover into line 1 is in the wrong place - it should connect prior to signal 026 and not after (Traksy is right on this).

Take a look up thread - there's a link to the video and an explanation of why it's been changed.

One of the issues of any web site, including this forum, that links to outside resources is that the outside resources cease to be available.  It's a risk people who post take, and I'm delighted that they do - otherwise our forum would be all the much the poorer.  A "thank you" to original posters where, as in the case of this thread, they have explained the change and done their best to ensure the resource can still be reached via the forum, even if it's no longer a direct link.

Since the closure of Old Oak the HST are coming from Reading train care depot and timetabled about an hour to get to Paddington. This seems incredibly inefficient. Does a special crew bring it to Paddington and then changed to the regular crew for the passenger part.  One of the trains I watch is IC91 which is now empty Reading- Paddington-Paignton-Newton Abbot-empty Laira.

I would have thought GWR would run these in passenger use if they are run in the morning/evening peaks to relieve overcrowding and reduce 'dead mileage'.

I would suspect they're running in the wrong direction - out of London to Reading towards the end of the morning peak, and back into London late in the afternoon.
