Title: Rough Riding - Paddington to Reading and on the Berks and Hants
Post by: SandTEngineer on November 17, 2018, 21:08:40
Today, Saturday 17 November 2018, I suffered what seemed like the worst ride I have had for 35 years on the Down Main Paddington to Reading and Berks and Hants to Taunton.  Earlier in the day I travelled Crewe to London Euston on the Up WCML and the ride was very smooth.  Either the HST sets are not getting the dedicated maintenance they used to, or the GWML trackwork is falling to pieces (and yes, I am aware of the embankment slip issues between Castle Cary and Athelney).....

Have others experienced this?

Bit of both I suspect. Hard to give the same care and attention to something you know is going.

Various people mention the ride quality of the B&H however not to many extremes. Could me a bit of both.

As I said in another post, the line from Cheltenham to Barnwood Junction is also bad, we need a Filton bank there, nice and smooth.

It is like a roller coaster, bounces the trains up and down if drivers go at speed.

Been along the B&H a couple of times recently in an IET and I think it is the track....

There’s quite a lot of emergency and temporary speed restrictions in place..... definitely the track.

With the engineering access for electrification work it possible access for track maintenance has been a bit limited; also as NR reaches the end of CP5 budgets get a bit tight so while ride might be a bit rough the Route team may decided there is no safety issue and live with the performance hit and have chosen to spend any funds at more important locations

Maybe NR Should run a tamper up and down the lines first, to see if that corrects it.
