A church based in the GWR pattern store will display old railway plans once it fully opens next year.

The Pattern Church, part of the Diocese of Bristol, welcomed a congregation to its first service at the pattern store building on Penzance Drive on Sunday.

The Grade II listed building, which until last year had been the Italian restaurant Bottelinos, was built in 1897 for Great Western Railway as a pattern store to keep engineering plans and designs.

Wouldn't a pattern store have been built mainly to store foundry patterns?

Its 100 wooden patterns left behind when the railway works closed in 1986, apparently. Ive no idea of detail beyond that - literally just quoting the article.

A verse from the Carol, "Once in Royal David's City," springs to mind:

"For He is our childhood's pattern, day by day like us He grew.
He was little, weak and helpless, tears and smiles like us He knew."

Another instance of Christian church involvement on the railway is the Rail Pastor scheme, paralleling the Street Pastor network. This provides a sympathetic buffer between late night revellers and the police (and worse dangers). They have blue-vis jackets and caps.
