Title: Orange Zones - Swindon
Post by: grahame on January 19, 2019, 10:22:29
With so much orange around at Swindon, should a new colour be selected for high-biz jackets?

Wasn't this used in the days of British rail. Then abandoned by TOC's. Now just never been removed at Swindon.

"First Class is in the Gold Zone, the Buffet is in the Blue Zone, Standard Class is in the Purple and Orange Zones." Goes right back to InterCity …

They were around at Didcot for a long time but I can't be sure what may still be left, after all the platform extensions and building works etc over the years. They tend not to be removed otherwise. (there is still a VT stop board on Platform 3 for example.)

The new thing are the IET carriage numbers painted onto the platform. Not to be confused with the carriage letters on reservations.

Red zones and white zones work well.  See opening credits of Airplane...

These orange zone markers seem to have just been painted on the platforms at Oldfield Park, of all places, so I assume they are being introduced widely. My immediate thought was that if they are painting them on there, then there must be a little more certainty that trains are going to have the correct number of carriages, which they rarely had for years up to 2018. This year does seem to have seen a marked improvement in that at least.

I'm not sure if its related to the introduction of the zones but the screens at Swindon have started showing "last reports" such as "This train is currently between Chippenham and Swindon".

Perhaps it is all part of a CIS upgrade?
