Title: One word in another - Corby in Corbyn
Post by: grahame on February 23, 2019, 09:25:40
Ten years ago today, Corby station re-opened. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-northamptonshire-47337015

Quote
A railway station opened 10 years ago has made a "massive" difference to a town that was once the largest in the UK not to have one, an MP said.

Corby station opened on 23 February 2009 with a service of one train a day to and from London ahead of the launch of a full service two months later.

MP Tom Pursglove said the station had "boosted jobs in our local economy".

The MP and rail staff cut into a birthday cake at a ceremony to celebrate the anniversary.

Searching for a thread to follow up on with this story (the Coffee Shop has been open longer than the current Corby station) I found references drowned out by the antics of a chap called Jeremy Corbyn.

Yeah, I know our search needs improvement.

Anyone else come across one word / name in another?  Anyone care to quote the 'classic' examples for new readers?

Parkstone gives you two for the price of one.

Tickets to / from Par have an "*" on the end to stop you devious types changing them to Parkstone or Parbold.

Returning to the original idea, I'm surprised we've not had this one, if only to meet the requirement for platform balance:

Maybole

Going back a bit, there are several more on similar lines...

Davenport (or Camelon?)
Blair Atholl
Smitham
Llantwit Major
Croftfoot
Eden Park

...and even...

Gobowen
British Steel Redcar

...with a special encore by popular request for

Scunthorpe

Not quite - I gave you a needle in a haystack and I think you have given me a haystack in a needle.

Not quite - I gave you a needle in a haystack and I think you have given me a haystack in a needle.

Hmmm - the question as posed was ambi...whatever. And the rider was slanted the other way - unless you do think there are well-known examples of rude words containing station names (and not just innuendos; far too easy).

But back in the sheep-fold, all we've got is Ashdown.

PS: for personalities floreatting before Beeching, are we allowed the longer list of contemporary station names?

Scunthorpe

That one foxed the first issue of spam and virus protection at the House of Commons. The member for Scunthorpe (I think a Mr Morley) wondered why he wasn't getting any emails, weeks after everybody else started receiving them.

Parkstone gives you two for the price of one.
It also lets park in the P-Ark (that's the one 14 places below the B-Ark).
